Give attention, my people, to my teaching; incline your ear to the words of my mouth.

I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter riddles from ancient times.

What we have heard and we know, and our fathers told us.

We will not conceal from their children, to a later generation, telling the praises of יהוה, and His strength, and His wonders which He did.

And He established a testimony in Ya'aqov, and He set a teaching in Yisra'el, which He commanded our fathers to make known to their children.

So that a later generation may know, children to be born may arise and tell them to their children.

And they may set their hope in Elohim, and not forget the deeds of El, and keep His commandments.

And they may not be like their fathers, a generation rebellious and defiant, a generation not having prepared its heart, and its spirit not having been faithful to El.

The sons of Efrayim, archers drawing bows, turned back on the day of battle.

They did not keep the covenant of Elohim, and in His teaching they refused to walk.

And they forgot His deeds, and His wonders which He showed them.

Before their fathers, He did a wonder in the land of Mitsrayim, the field of Tso'an.

He split the sea and brought them through, and He set the waters like a wall.

And He led them by a cloud by day, and all the night by a light of fire.

He split rocks in the wilderness, and He gave them drink like from great depths.

And He brought forth streams from the rock, and He made waters flow like rivers.

And they still sinned against Him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.

And they tested El in their heart, asking for food for their souls.

And they spoke against Elohim, saying, 'Can El prepare a table in the wilderness?'

Behold, He struck the rock, and waters flowed, and streams overflowed. Can He also give bread? Or can He prepare meat for His people?

Therefore, יהוה heard and became angry, and fire was kindled against Ya'aqov, and also anger arose against Yisra'el.

Because they did not believe in Elohim, and did not trust in His salvation.

And He commanded the skies from above, and opened the doors of heaven.

And He rained down manna for them to eat, and gave them grain from heaven.

A man ate the food of angels; He sent them provisions to their fill.

He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens, and by His strength He drove the south wind.

And He rained down meat upon them like dust, and winged birds like sand of the seas.

And He let them fall in the midst of His camp, all around His dwellings.

And they ate and were greatly satisfied, and He brought them their desire.

They had not yet been deprived of their desire; their food was still in their mouths.

And the anger of Elohim rose against them, and He killed their fattest ones, and struck down the young men of Yisra'el.

In all this, they still sinned, and did not believe in His wonders.

And He consumed their days in futility, and their years in sudden destruction.

If He killed them, they would seek Him, and they would return and seek El earnestly.

And they would remember that Elohim was their rock, and El Most High their redeemer.

And they would try to deceive Him with their mouths, and with their tongues they would lie to Him.

But their heart was not steadfast with Him, and they were not faithful to His covenant.

But He, being compassionate, would atone for iniquity, and would not destroy, and He often turned back His anger, and did not stir up all His wrath.

And He remembered that they are flesh, a wind that goes and does not return.

How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness, how often they grieved Him in the desolate land.

And they returned and tested El, and provoked the Holy One of Yisra'el.

They did not remember His hand, the day He redeemed them from the oppressor.

Which He performed in Mitsrayim, His signs, and His wonders in the field of Tso'an.

And He turned their rivers into blood, and their streams they could not drink.

He sent among them swarms of insects which devoured them, and frogs which destroyed them.

And He gave their produce to the locust, and their labor to the grasshopper.

He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycamore trees with frost.

And He gave their cattle over to hail, and their flocks to fiery bolts.

He sent among them the heat of His anger, fury, and indignation, and trouble, a sending of evil angels.

He leveled a path for His anger; He did not withhold them from death, and their living things He gave over to pestilence.

And He struck every firstborn in Mitsrayim, the first of the strength in the tents of Ham.

And He led out His people like sheep, and guided them like a flock in the wilderness.

And He led them securely, and they did not fear, and the sea covered their enemies.

And He brought them to the border of His sanctuary, this mountain which His right hand acquired.

And He drove out nations from before them, and allotted them by lot as an inheritance, and He settled the tribes of Yisra'el in their tents.

And they tested and rebelled against El Most High, and they did not keep His testimonies.

And they turned back and acted treacherously like their fathers; they turned aside like a faulty bow.

And they provoked Him to anger with their high places, and with their graven images they made Him jealous.

Elohim heard and became angry, and greatly disdained Yisra'el.

And He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent He had placed among men.

And He gave His strength into captivity, and His splendor into the hand of the oppressor.

And He gave His people over to the sword, and He became angry with His inheritance.

Fire consumed their young men, and their virgins were not praised.

Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows did not weep.

And Adonai awoke like one sleeping, like a mighty one shouting from wine.

And He struck His enemies from behind; He gave them everlasting shame.

And He disdained the tent of Yosef, and He did not choose the tribe of Efrayim.

And He chose the tribe of Yehudah, Mount Tsiyon, which He loved.

And He built His sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth He founded forever.

And He chose David His servant, and took him from the sheepfolds.

From following the ewes He brought him to shepherd Ya'aqov His people, and Yisra'el His inheritance.

And he shepherded them with integrity of his heart, and with the skill of his hands he guided them.
