The new moon was sighted from Israel this evening on December 8, 2018!

* From Eilat at around 5:00pm by Lukas Schneider, Anabelle Santos, and Lior Schneider.

As Rosh Chodesh (the first day of the month) begins the evening the new moon is sighted, the first day of this month is from sunset December 8, 2018 – sunset December 9, 2018. Be sure to keep track of what number month this is, based on when you started the new year.

New moon seen for few seconds despite heavy clouds. RJ (2 observers)

There was no sighting on 11/8/2018, perhaps due to very thick clouds. On 11/9/2018, clouds began to move out of the western sky, but there were still clouds near the horizon. The crescent moon was sighted beginning at 6:07pm through a layer clouds. WI (3 observers)

Moon was very low on the horizon but was observed with no aid. The cell phone was unfortunately not sensitive enough to take a good photo in low light and digital zoom. TW (2 observers)

The thin crescent became visible at approximately 8:08 pm central time on 9/10/2018 from Elmer Thomas Park in Lawton, OK. Shofars were sounded!! No sighting on 9/9/2018. WI (9 observers)

The renewed moon was NOT seen in Israel today.

Therefore, the start of the 7th biblical month (Tishri) will begin at SUNSET TOMORROW, Tuesday, September 11, 2018.

This also means that sunset TOMORROW marks the start of Yom Teruah, which ends at sunset Wednesday, September 12.  The remainder of the fall feast “high holy days” (i.e., special sabbaths) are as follows:

  • Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) – sunset Sept 21
  • Sukkot – Day 1 (Feast of Tabernacles) – sunset Sept 26
  • Shemini Atzeret (8th Day of Assembly) – sunset Oct 3
