Reuven's sons and Gad's sons had a lot of livestock, very large numbers, and they saw the land of Ya'zer and the land of Gil'ad. And the place was a place for livestock.

Gad's sons and Reuven's sons came and said to Mosheh, to El'azar the kohen, and to the leaders of the community,

'Atarot, Divon, Ya'zer, Nimrah, Cheshvon, El'aleh, Sevam, Nevoh, and Ve'on,

the land that יהוה struck down before the Yisra'el community. It is land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.

If we have found favor in your eyes, give this land to your servants as a possession. Do not make us cross the Yarden.

Mosheh said to Gad's sons and Reuven's sons, 'Your brothers are going to war, and you stay here?'

Why do you discourage the hearts of Yisra'el's sons from crossing to the land that יהוה gave them?

This is what your fathers did when I sent them out from Qadesh Varne'a to see the land.

They went up to Nahal Eshkol and saw the land, and they discouraged the hearts of Yisra'el's sons from entering the land that יהוה gave them.

יהוה's anger burned that day, and he swore,

None of the men who came up from Mitsrayim, from twenty years old and upward, will see the land that I swore to Avraham, to Yitsḥaq, and to Ya'aqov, because they did not fully follow me,

except Kalev son of Yefuneh the Qenizzi and Yehoshua son of Nun, because they fully followed יהוה.

יהוה's anger burned against Yisra'el, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years until the whole generation that did evil in יהוה's eyes came to an end.

Now you take your fathers' place, a brood of sinful men, to add still more to יהוה's burning anger against Yisra'el.

If you turn away from following him, he will once more leave all this people in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.

They approached him and said, 'We will build sheepfolds for our livestock here and cities for our children.'

But we will arm ourselves quickly ahead of Yisra'el's sons until we bring them to their place. Meanwhile our children will live in the fortified cities because of the land's inhabitants.

We will not return to our homes until each Yisra'elite receives his inheritance.

For we will not inherit with them beyond the Yarden and farther, since our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Yarden eastward.

Mosheh said to them, 'If you do this—if you arm yourselves before יהוה for battle—

every one of you armed will cross the Yarden before יהוה until he dispossesses his enemies from before him,

and the land is subdued before יהוה—then afterward you may return and be free before יהוה and Yisra'el, and this land will be your possession before יהוה.'

But if you do not do this, you will have sinned against יהוה, and know that your sin will find you out.

Build cities for your children and folds for your flocks, and do what has gone out of your mouth.

Gad's sons and Reuven's sons said to Mosheh, 'Your servants will do as Adonai commands.'

Our children, our wives, our livestock, and all our animals will stay there in Gil'ad's cities.

But your servants, every ready man of war, will cross over before יהוה for battle, just as Adonai says.

Mosheh commanded El'azar the kohen, Yehoshua son of Nun, and the heads of Yisra'el's ancestral houses

and said to them, 'If Gad's sons and Reuven's sons cross the Yarden with you, every one armed for battle before יהוה, and the land is subdued before you, then give them the land of Gil'ad as a possession.

But if they do not cross over fully armed with you, they will have a possession among you in the land of Kena'an.'

Gad's sons and Reuven's sons answered, 'What יהוה said to your servants, so we will do.'

We will cross over armed before יהוה into the land of Kena'an, and our inheritance possession will be with us beyond the Yarden.

Mosheh gave to them—to Gad's sons, Reuven's sons, and half the tribe of Menasheh son of Yosef—the kingdom of Siḥon king of the 'Emori and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan: the land with its cities, the borders of the land's cities all around.

Gad's sons built Divon, 'Atarot, and 'Aro'er;

'Atrot Shofan, Ya'zer, and Yigbehah;

Beit Nimrah and Beit Ḥaran, fortified cities and sheepfolds.

Reuven's sons built Cheshvon, El'aleh, and Qiryatayim;

Nevoh and Ba'al Me'on (names changed), and Sivmah. They gave names to the cities they built.

Menasheh's son Maḵir's sons went to Gil'ad, captured it, and dispossessed the 'Emori who were there.

Mosheh gave Gil'ad to Maḵir son of Menasheh, and he lived there.

And Ya'ir the son of Menasheh went and captured their villages, and he called them the villages of Ya'ir.

And Novach went and captured Qenat and its villages, and he called it Novach in his name.
