And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying:

Send for yourself men, and they shall scout the land of Kena'an, which I am giving to the children of Yisra'el. A man, a man, according to the tribe of his fathers you shall send; every chief among them.

And Mosheh sent them from the wilderness of Paran, by the command of יהוה; all of them men, chiefs of the children of Yisra'el, they were.

And these are their names: For the tribe of Re'uven, Shamu'a son of Zakur.

For the tribe of Shim'on, Shofat son of Ḥori.

For the tribe of Yehudah, Kalev son of Yefuneh.

For the tribe of Yissakhar, Yigal son of Yosef.

For the tribe of Efrayim, Hoshea son of Nun.

For the tribe of Binyamin, Paltiel son of Rapu.

For the tribe of Zevulun, Gadi'el son of Sodi.

For the tribe of Yosef, for the tribe of Menasheh, Gadi son of Susi.

For the tribe of Dan, 'Ami'el son of Gemalli.

For the tribe of Asher, Setur son of Mikha'el.

For the tribe of Naftali, Naḥbi son of Vofsi.

For the tribe of Gad, Ge'u'el son of Maki.

These are the names of the men whom Mosheh sent to scout the land. And Mosheh called Hoshea son of Nun, Yehoshua.

And Mosheh sent them to scout the land of Kena'an, and he said to them, 'Go up here in the Negev, and you shall go up into the hill country.'

'And see the land, what it is, and the people dwelling on it; are they strong or weak? Are they few or many?'

'And what is the land in which they dwell? Is it good or bad? And what are the cities in which they dwell? Are they in camps or in fortified cities?'

'And what is the land? Is it fertile or barren? Is there wood in it or not? And be strong, and take from the fruit of the land.' And the days were the days of the first ripe grapes.

'And they went up, and they scouted the land from the wilderness of Tsin to Reḥov, toward Ḥamat.'

'And they went up in the Negev, and they came to Ḥevron. And there were Aḥiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of the 'Anakim. And Ḥevron was built seven years before Ts'o'an of Mitsrayim.'

'And they came to the valley of Eshkol, and they cut from there a branch with a cluster of grapes, one cluster. And they carried it on a pole, by two men, and some of the pomegranates and some of the figs.'

'To that place they called the valley of Eshkol, because of the cluster which the children of Yisra'el cut from there.'

'And they returned from scouting the land, at the end of forty days.'

'And they went and came to Mosheh and to Aharon and to all the congregation of the children of Yisra'el, to the wilderness of Paran, to Qadesh. And they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and they showed them the fruit of the land.'

'And they told him, and they said, 'We came to the land to which you sent us, and indeed it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.'

'However, the people dwelling in the land are strong, and the cities are very greatly fortified. And also, we saw the descendants of the 'Anakim there.'

''Amalek dwells in the land of the Negev. And the Ḥitti, and the Yevusi, and the Emori dwell in the hill country. And the Kena'ani dwells by the sea and by the Jordan.'

'And Kalev quieted the people toward Mosheh, and he said, 'Let us go up, and we shall inherit it, for we are able to overcome it.'"

'But the men who went up with him said, 'We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.'"

'And they brought out a bad report of the land which they had scouted to the children of Yisra'el, saying, 'The land through which we passed to scout it is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in its midst are men of great stature.'

'And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of 'Anak, from the Nephilim. And we were in our eyes like grasshoppers, and so we were in their eyes.'"
