The sons of Yisra'el acted unfaithfully concerning the devoted things, and Ya'aqov took from the devoted things, and the anger of יהוה burned against the sons of Yisra'el.

And Yehoshua sent men from Yerikho to Ai, which is beside Bet-Aven, east of Bet-El, and said to them, saying, 'Go up and scout the land.' And the men went up and scouted Ai.

And they returned to Yehoshua and said to him, 'Let not all the people go up; about two thousand men or about three thousand men should go up and strike Ai. Do not make all the people toil there, for they are few.'

And about three thousand men went up from the people, and they fled before the men of Ai.

And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six of them, and they pursued them from before the gate to the quarries, and struck them down on the descent, and the heart of the people melted and became like water.

And Yehoshua tore his garments and fell on his face to the earth before the ark of יהוה until evening, he and the elders of Yisra'el, and they put dust on their heads.

And Yehoshua said, 'Alas, Adonai יהוה, why did you bring this people across the Yarden to give us into the hand of the Emori to destroy us? If only we had been content and lived on the other side of the Yarden!'

'O Adonai, what shall I say after Yisra'el has turned their backs before their enemies?'

'And the Kena'ani and all the inhabitants of the land will hear and will surround us and cut off our name from the land. And what will you do for your great name?'

And יהוה said to Yehoshua, 'Get up! Why is it that you are falling on your face?'

'Yisra'el has sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them. They have also taken from the devoted things, and they have also stolen, and they have also deceived, and they have also put them among their own belongings.'

'And the sons of Yisra'el will not be able to stand before their enemies; they will turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted to destruction. I will not continue to be with you unless you destroy the devoted thing from among you.'

'Get up! Consecrate the people and say, 'Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, for thus says יהוה, Elohim of Yisra'el: There is a devoted thing in your midst, Yisra'el. You will not be able to stand before your enemies until you remove the devoted thing from among you.'

'And you shall draw near in the morning by your tribes, and it shall be that the tribe which יהוה captures shall draw near by families, and the family which יהוה captures shall draw near by households, and the household which יהוה captures shall draw near by men.'

'And it shall be that the one captured with the devoted thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has transgressed the covenant of יהוה and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Yisra'el.'

And Yehoshua got up early in the morning and brought Yisra'el near by their tribes, and the tribe of Yehudah was captured.

And he brought near the family of Yehudah, and the family of the Zarḥi was captured. And he brought near the family of the Zarḥi by men, and Zavdi was captured.

And he brought near his household by men, and 'Akan son of Karmī, son of Zavdi, son of Zerach, of the tribe of Yehudah, was captured.

And Yehoshua said to 'Akan, 'My son, give honor now to יהוה, Elohim of Yisra'el, and give him thanks, and tell me now, what have you done? Do not hide it from me.'

And 'Akan answered Yehoshua and said, 'Truly, I have sinned against יהוה, Elohim of Yisra'el, and this and this is what I have done.'

'When I saw among the spoil a fine Shinar robe, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a tongue of gold, fifty shekels in weight, I coveted them and took them. And behold, they are hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver is underneath.'

And Yehoshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and behold, it was hidden in his tent, and the silver was underneath it.

And they took them from the midst of the tent and brought them to Yehoshua and to all the sons of Yisra'el, and they laid them out before יהוה.

And Yehoshua took 'Akan son of Zerach, and the silver, and the robe, and the tongue of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his ox, and his donkey, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that belonged to him, and all Yisra'el with him, and they brought them up to the valley of 'Akor.

And Yehoshua said, 'Why have you troubled us? May יהוה trouble you this day.' And all Yisra'el stoned him with stones, and they burned them with fire, and they stoned them with stones.

And they set up over him a great heap of stones, to this day. And יהוה turned from his burning anger. Therefore, the name of that place was called the Valley of 'Akor to this day.
