And it displeased Yonah with a great displeasure, and it burned for him.

And he prayed to יהוה and said, 'Please, יהוה, was this not my word while I was on my land? Because of this, I hurried to flee to Tarshish, because I knew that you are an El of grace and compassion, slow to anger and abundant in kindness, and you relent from disaster.'

And now, יהוה, please take my life from me, for my death is better than my life.'

And יהוה said, 'Is it good for you to be angry?'

And Yonah went out from the city and sat east of the city, and he made himself a shelter there and sat under it in the shade until he could see what would happen in the city.

And יהוה Elohim appointed a gourd plant, and it came up over Yonah to be shade over his head, to deliver him from his distress. And Yonah rejoiced over the gourd plant with great joy.

And Elohim appointed a worm when dawn broke the next day, and it struck the gourd plant, and it dried up.

And it happened, as the sun rose, Elohim appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun struck Yonah's head, and he fainted, and he asked for his life to die, and he said, 'My death is better than my life.'

And Elohim said to Yonah, 'Is it good for you to be angry about the gourd plant?' And he said, 'It is good for me to be angry, even to death.'

And יהוה said, 'You had pity on the gourd plant, which you did not labor for, nor did you cause it to grow; it was a son of a night and a son of a night it perished.'

And should I not pity Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than twelve myriads of people who do not know their right hand from their left, and much livestock?'
