And the word of יהוה came to Yonah son of Amitai, saying:

Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry out against it, for its wickedness has come up before Me.

But Yonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of יהוה. And he went down to Yafo and found a ship going to Tarshish, and he paid its fare and went down in it to go with them to Tarshish, from the presence of יהוה.

And יהוה hurled a great wind into the sea, and there was a great storm in the sea, and the ship was about to break.

And the sailors feared, and they cried out, each man to his Elohim, and they threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it from them. But Yonah had gone down into the sides of the ship, and he lay down and was fast asleep.

And the captain came near to him and said to him, 'What is with you, sleeper? Arise, cry out to your Elohim; perhaps the Elohim will think about us, and we will not perish.'

And they said, each man to his neighbor, 'Come, and let us cast lots, and let us know because of whom this disaster is upon us.' And they cast lots, and the lot fell on Yonah.

And they said to him, 'Tell us, please, because of whom is this disaster upon us? What is your occupation, and from where do you come? What is your land, and of what people are you?'

And he said to them, 'I am a Hebrew, and I fear יהוה, the Elohim of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.'

And the men feared a great fear, and they said to him, 'Why have you done this?' For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of יהוה, because he had told them.

And they said to him, 'What shall we do to you, that the sea may become calm for us?' For the sea was going and storming.

And he said to them, 'Take me up and throw me into the sea, and the sea will become calm for you, for I know that because of me this great storm is upon you.'

And the men rowed hard to return to the dry land, but they could not, for the sea was going and storming against them.

And they cried out to יהוה and said, 'Please, יהוה, let us not perish because of this man's life, and do not lay upon us innocent blood, for you, יהוה, have done as you pleased.'

And they took up Yonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging.

And the men feared יהוה with a great fear, and they sacrificed a sacrifice to יהוה and vowed vows.
