The word of יהוה that came to Yo'el son of Petu'el.

Hear this, you elders, and listen, all inhabitants of the land. Has this happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers?

Tell your sons about it, and your sons to their sons, and their sons to the next generation.

What the cutting locust left, the swarming locust ate; and what the swarming locust left, the crawling locust ate; and what the crawling locust left, the consuming locust ate.

Wake up, you drunkards, and weep; and wail, all you who drink wine, because of the sweet wine, for it is cut off from your mouth.

For a nation has come up against my land, mighty and without number; its teeth are the teeth of a lion, and it has the fangs of a lioness.

It has made my vine a desolation, and my fig tree a ruin; it has stripped it bare and thrown it down; its branches have become white.

Mourn like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

Grain offering and drink offering are cut off from the house of יהוה; the priests, the servants of יהוה, mourn.

The field is ruined, the land mourns; for the grain is ruined, the new wine has dried up, the olive oil has failed.

Be ashamed, farmers; wail, vinedressers, over the wheat and over the barley, for the harvest of the field has perished.

The vine has dried up, and the fig tree has failed; the pomegranate, also the palm and the apple tree, all the trees of the field have dried up; for joy has dried up from the children of Adam.

Gird yourselves and lament, you priests; wail, you servants of the altar; come, spend the night in sackcloth, you servants of my Elohim, for the grain offering and drink offering are withheld from the house of your Elohim.

Consecrate a fast, call a solemn assembly; gather the elders, all the inhabitants of the land, to the house of יהוה your Elohim, and cry out to יהוה.

Alas for the day, for the day of יהוה is near, and it will come as destruction from Shaddai.

Is not food cut off before our eyes, joy and gladness from the house of our Elohim?

The seeds have shriveled under the clods; the storehouses are desolate; the granaries are broken down, for the grain has dried up.

How the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are bewildered, because there is no pasture for them; even the flocks of sheep are made desolate.

To you, יהוה, I cry out, for fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and flame has burned all the trees of the field.

Even the wild animals cry out to you, for the streams of water have dried up, and fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
