A covenant I made with my eyes; how then should I look upon a virgin?

And what is the portion of Elohim from above, and the inheritance of Shaddai from the heights?

Is not ruin for the unjust, and strangeness for the workers of iniquity?

Does he not see my ways, and count all my steps?

If I walked with falsehood, and my foot hurried to deceit,

May he weigh me in scales of justice, and may Elohim know my integrity.

If my step turned aside from the path, and my heart followed my eyes, and a stain cleaved to my hands,

May I sow, and another eat, and may my offspring be uprooted.

If my heart was enticed by a woman, and I lay in wait at my neighbor's door,

May my wife grind for another, and may others bow down to her.

For that is a shameful act, and a punishable iniquity.

For it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and it uproots all my produce.

If I wronged my male servant or my female servant when they contended with me,

What then shall I do when Elohim rises up? And when he visits, what shall I answer him?

Did not the one who made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?

If I withheld from the desire of the poor, and caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

If I ate my morsel alone, and the orphan did not eat from it,

For from my youth he raised me like a father, and from my mother's womb I guided her.

If I saw anyone perish for lack of clothing, and a needy person without covering,

If his loins did not bless me, and he was not warmed from the fleece of my sheep,

If I lifted my hand against an orphan, because I saw my help in the gate,

May my shoulder fall from its socket, and my arm be broken from the bone.

For the dread of Elohim is upon me, and because of his majesty I cannot endure.

If I made gold my confidence, or said to fine gold, 'You are my security',

If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gained much,

If I looked at the light when it shone, or at the moon walking in splendor,

And my heart was secretly enticed, and my hand kissed my mouth,

This too would be a punishable iniquity, for I would have denied Elohim above.

If I rejoiced at the ruin of him who hated me, and exulted when he met misfortune,

Nor allowed my mouth to sin by asking for a curse on his life,

If the men of my tent did not say, 'Who is there that has not been filled with his meat?'

The sojourner did not lodge outside; I opened my doors to the traveler.

If I concealed my transgressions like Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my pocket,

Because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, and I did not keep silent, nor go out the door.

Oh, that I had one to hear me! Here is my signature; let Shaddai answer me. And let my opponent write a document.

Surely I would carry it on my shoulder; I would wear it as a crown.

I would declare to him the number of my steps; like a prince I would approach him.

If my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together,

If I consumed its strength without payment, and caused the death of its owners,

Instead of wheat may thistles grow, and instead of barley may weeds grow. The words of Iyov are ended.
