After this, Iyov opened his mouth and cursed his day.

And Iyov answered and said:

May the day perish on which I was born, and the night that said, 'A male is conceived.'

May that day be darkness; may Elohim not seek it from above, nor may light shine upon it.

May darkness and shadow of death claim it; may a cloud dwell upon it; may the gloom of day terrify it.

May night seize that night; may it not be counted in the days of the year; may it not come in the number of months.

Behold, may that night be barren; may gladness not come in it.

May those who curse days curse it, those who are ready to rouse Leviathan.

May the stars of its twilight be darkened; may it look for light, but there is none, nor may it see the eyelids of the dawn.

For it did not shut the doors of my mother's womb, nor did it hide trouble from my eyes.

Why did I not die from the womb? Why did I not perish when I came out from the belly?

Why did knees receive me, and why breasts, that I should groan?

For now I would have lain down and been quiet; I would have slept; then I would have had rest.

With kings and counselors of the earth who built ruins for themselves,

Or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver.

Or like a hidden miscarriage I would not exist, like infants who never saw light.

There the wicked cease from raging; there the weary in strength are at rest.

Together prisoners are at ease; they do not hear the voice of the oppressor.

Small and great are there, and the servant is free from his master.

Why does He give light to the suffering, and life to those bitter in soul?

Those who wait for death, but it is not there, and dig for it more than for hidden treasures,

Those who rejoice to exultation, who are glad when they find a grave,

To a man whose way is hidden, and whom Elohim has hedged in.

For before my bread comes my groaning, and my roaring pours out like water.

For the thing I feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has happened to me.

I am not at ease, nor am I quiet, nor have I rested, but trouble has come.
