And it came to pass, the day, and the sons of Elohim came to present themselves before יהוה, and the Adversary also came among them to present himself before יהוה.

And יהוה said to the Adversary, From where do you come? And the Adversary answered יהוה and said, From roaming the earth and from walking in it.

And יהוה said to the Adversary, Have you set your heart on my servant Iyov, because there is none like him on the earth, a man blameless and upright, fearing Elohim and turning from evil? And still he holds fast to his blamelessness, and you incited me against him to swallow him without cause.

And the Adversary answered יהוה and said, Skin for skin, and all that a man has he will give for his life.

But stretch out your hand now and touch his bone and his flesh; if he does not curse you to your face.

And יהוה said to the Adversary, Behold, he is in your hand; only his life, spare.

And the Adversary went out from the presence of יהוה, and struck Iyov with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.

And he took a shard of pottery to scrape himself with it, and he sat in the midst of the ashes.

And his wife said to him, Are you still holding fast to your blamelessness? Curse Elohim and die.

And he said to her, Like one foolish thing you speak. Also the good we will receive from Elohim, and the bad we will not receive? In all this, Iyov did not sin with his lips.

And the three friends of Iyov heard all this evil that had come upon him, and each came from his place: Elifaz the Temani, Bildad the Shuchi, and Tsophar the Naamati, and they agreed together to come to mourn for him and to comfort him.

And they lifted up their eyes from afar, and they did not recognize him, and they lifted up their voice and wept, and each tore his robe, and they threw dust over their heads toward the heavens.

And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that the pain was very great.
