And יהוה's anger burned again against Yisra'el, and he incited David against them, saying, 'Go, number Yisra'el and Yehudah.'

And the king said to Yo'av, the commander of the army who was with him, 'Go now through all the tribes of Yisra'el, from Dan even to Be'er Sheva, and count the people, and I will know the number of the people.'

And Yo'av said to the king, 'May יהוה your Elohim add to the people a hundred times more than they are, and may the eyes of my Adonai the king see it. But why does my Adonai the king desire this thing?'

But the king's word was strong against Yo'av and against the commanders of the army, and Yo'av and the commanders of the army went out from the presence of the king to number the people, Yisra'el.

And they crossed the Jordan and camped in Aro'er, to the right of the city that is in the middle of the valley, and toward Ya'azer.

And they came to Gil'ad and to the land of Taḥtim Ḥodshi, and they came to Dan Ya'an, and around to Tsidon.

And they came to the fortress of Tzor and all the cities of the Ḥivvi and the Kena'ani, and they went out to the Negev of Yehudah, to Be'er Sheva.

And they traveled through all the land, and they came to Yerushalayim at the end of nine months and twenty days.

And Yo'av gave the total of the numbering of the people to the king, and Yisra'el was eight hundred thousand men of war, drawing swords, and the men of Yehudah were five hundred thousand men.

And David's heart struck him after he had numbered the people, and David said to יהוה, 'I have sinned greatly in what I have done. And now, יהוה, please remove the iniquity of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.'

And David arose in the morning, and the word of יהוה came to Gad the prophet, David's seer, saying:

'Go and speak to David, 'Thus says יהוה, 'I am offering you three things. Choose for yourself one of them, and I will do it to you.''

And Gad came to David and told him, and he said to him, 'Will seven years of famine come to your land, or will you flee for three months before your enemies, and they pursue you, or will there be three days of pestilence in your land? Now know and see what answer I will bring back to the one who sent me.'

And David said to Gad, 'I am in great distress. Let us fall, please, into the hand of יהוה, for his mercies are great, but into the hand of man let me not fall.'

And יהוה sent a pestilence on Yisra'el from the morning until the appointed time, and there died of the people from Dan even to Be'er Sheva seventy thousand men.

And the angel stretched out his hand toward Yerushalayim to destroy it, and יהוה relented concerning the disaster, and said to the destroying angel among the people, 'Enough! Now withdraw your hand.' And the angel of יהוה was at the threshing floor of Aravnah the Yevusi.

And David said to יהוה when he saw the angel striking the people, and he said, 'Behold, I have sinned, and I have done iniquity. But these sheep, what have they done? Let your hand, please, be on me and on my father's house.'

And Gad came to David that day and said to him, 'Go up, erect an altar to יהוה on the threshing floor of Aravnah the Yevusi.'

And David went up according to the word of Gad, as יהוה commanded.

And Aravnah looked and saw the king and his servants passing toward him, and Aravnah went out and bowed to the king with his face to the ground.

And Aravnah said, 'Why has my Adonai the king come to his servant?' And David said, 'To buy the threshing floor from you to build an altar to יהוה, so that the plague may be held back from the people.'

And Aravnah said to David, 'Let my Adonai the king take and offer what is good in his eyes. Behold, the oxen for a burnt offering, and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for wood.'

All this, Aravnah the king, gave to the king. And Aravnah said to the king, 'May יהוה your Elohim accept you.'

And the king said to Aravnah, 'No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price, and I will not offer to יהוה my Elohim burnt offerings that cost nothing.' And David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

And David built an altar there to יהוה and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. And יהוה responded to the land, and the plague was held back from Yisra'el.
