And it came to pass at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out, that David sent Yo'av, and his servants with him, and all Yisra'el, and they ravaged the sons of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David was sitting in Yerushalayim.

And it came to pass at the time of evening, that David arose from off his couch, and walked on the roof of the king's house. And he saw a woman bathing from the roof, and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

And David sent and inquired about the woman. And he said, Is not this Bat-Sheva, the daughter of Eli'am, the wife of Uriyah the Hittite?

And David sent messengers, and took her. And she came to him, and he lay with her. And she was purifying herself from her uncleanness. And she returned to her house.

And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am pregnant.

And David sent to Yo'av, saying, Send to me Uriyah the Hittite. And Yo'av sent Uriyah to David.

And Uriyah came to him. And David asked about the welfare of Yo'av, and about the welfare of the people, and about the welfare of the war.

And David said to Uriyah, Go down to your house, and wash your feet. And Uriyah went out from the king's house, and a gift from the king followed him.

And Uriyah lay at the entrance of the king's house with all the servants of his master, and did not go down to his house.

And they told David, saying, Uriyah did not go down to his house. And David said to Uriyah, Did you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?

And Uriyah said to David, The Ark, and Yisra'el, and Yehudah are dwelling in tents. And my master Yo'av, and the servants of my master are encamped in the open field. And I, shall I come to my house to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, if I do this thing.

And David said to Uriyah, Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send you away. And Uriyah remained in Yerushalayim on that day and the next.

And David called him, and he ate before him, and he drank, and he made him drunk. And he went out in the evening to lie down in his sleeping place with the servants of his master, and to his house he did not go down.

And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Yo'av, and sent it by the hand of Uriyah.

And he wrote in the letter, saying, Place Uriyah where the fighting is fiercest, and retreat from behind him, so that he may be struck down and die.

And it came to pass, as Yo'av was besieging the city, that he placed Uriyah at the place where he knew valiant men were.

And the men of the city came out and fought with Yo'av. And some of the people, servants of David, fell, and Uriyah the Hittite also died.

And Yo'av sent and told David all the words of the war.

And he commanded the messenger, saying, When you have finished telling David all the words of the war,

And it will be, if the king's anger rises, and he says to you, Why did you approach the city to fight? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall?

Who struck Avimelekh the son of Yerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast a millstone upon him from the wall, and he died in Tevetz? Why did you approach the wall? And you shall say, Your servant Uriyah the Hittite also is dead.

And the messenger went, and came, and told David all that Yo'av had sent him to say.

And the messenger said to David, The men were too strong for us, and they came out against us in the field, and we were upon them up to the entrance of the gate.

And the archers shot at your servants from the wall, and some of the king's servants died. And your servant Uriyah the Hittite also died.

And David said to the messenger, Thus you shall say to Yo'av, Let this matter not be evil in your eyes, for the sword devours thus and thus. Make your war against the city stronger, and overthrow it, and strengthen it.

And the wife of Uriyah heard that Uriyah her husband was dead, and she mourned for her husband.

And the mourning passed, and David sent and brought her into his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. And the thing that David had done was evil in the eyes of יהוה.
