And it happened after this, and the king of the sons of Ammon died, and Ḥanun his son reigned in his place.

And David said, 'I will do kindness with Ḥanun, son of Naḥash, as his father did kindness with me.' And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants to his father, and the servants of David came to the land of the sons of Ammon.

And the princes of the sons of Ammon said to Ḥanun their Adonai, 'Does David honor your father in your eyes? For he sent to you comforters. Is it not for the purpose of exploring the city and spying it out and overthrowing it that David sent his servants to you?'

And Ḥanun took the servants of David, and he shaved off half of their beards, and he cut their garments in half down to their buttocks, and he sent them away.

And they told David, and he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly shamed. And the king said, 'Stay in Yeriḥo until your beards grow, and then you will return.'

And the sons of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, and the sons of Ammon sent and hired the Arameans of Beth-reḥov and the Arameans of Tsavah, twenty thousand foot soldiers, and the king of Ma'akhah, one thousand men, and the men of Tov, twelve thousand men.

And David heard, and he sent Yo'av and all the army of the mighty warriors.

And the sons of Ammon went out and arrayed for battle at the entrance of the city, and the Arameans of Tsavah and Reḥov, and the men of Tov and Ma'akhah, were alone in the field.

And Yo'av saw that the face of the battle was against him from the front and from the rear, and he chose from all the best young men of Yisra'el, and he arrayed against the Arameans.

And the rest of the people he gave into the hand of his brother Avishay, and he arrayed against the sons of Ammon.

And he said, 'If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you will be my salvation, and if the sons of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will go to save you.'

Be strong and let us be strong for our people and for the cities of our Elohim, and יהוה will do what is good in His eyes.'

And Yo'av and the people who were with him drew near to battle against the Arameans, and they fled from his face.

And the sons of Ammon saw that the Arameans had fled, and they fled from the face of Avishay, and they came into the city. And Yo'av returned from against the sons of Ammon and came to Yerushalayim.

And the Arameans saw that they had been defeated before Yisra'el, and they gathered together.

And Ḥadadezer sent, and he brought out the Arameans who were from across the river, and they came to Ḥelam, and Shovakh, the commander of Ḥadadezer's army, was before them.

And it was told to David, and he gathered all Yisra'el, and he crossed the Yarden, and he came to Ḥelam. And the Arameans arrayed against David, and they fought with him.

And the Arameans fled from the face of Yisra'el, and David killed from the Arameans seven hundred chariots and forty thousand horsemen, and he struck Shovakh, the commander of their army, and he died there.

And all the kings, the servants of Ḥadadezer, saw that they had been defeated before Yisra'el, and they made peace with Yisra'el and served them. And the Arameans feared to save the sons of Ammon anymore.
