And it happened after the death of Sha'ul, and David returned from striking down the Amalekites, and David dwelled in Tsitslag for two days.

And it happened on the third day, and behold, a man came from the camp, from Sha'ul, and his clothes were torn, and dust was on his head. And it happened when he came to David, he fell to the earth and bowed.

And David said to him, 'From where do you come?' And he said to him, 'From the camp of Yisra'el I have escaped.'

And David said to him, 'What was the matter? Tell me, please.' And he said, 'The people fled from the battle, and also many fell of the people and died. And also Sha'ul and Yonatan his son died.'

And David said to the young man telling him, 'How did you know that Sha'ul and Yonatan his son died?'

And the young man telling him said, 'I came by chance upon Mount Gilbo'a, and behold, Sha'ul was leaning on his spear, and behold, the chariots and horsemen were pursuing him.'

And he turned behind him and saw me, and he called to me, and I said, 'Here I am.'

And he said to me, 'Who are you?' And I said to him, 'I am an Amalekite.'

And he said to me, 'Stand over me, please, and kill me, for the cramp has seized me, for my life is still in me.'

And I stood over him and killed him, for I knew that he would not live after his fall. And I took the diadem that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and I brought them here to my master.'

And David grasped his clothes and tore them, and also all the men who were with him.

And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Sha'ul and for Yonatan his son and for the people of יהוה and for the house of Yisra'el, because they fell by the sword.

And David said to the young man telling him, 'From where are you?' And he said, 'I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.'

And David said to him, 'How did you not fear to stretch out your hand to destroy the anointed of יהוה?'

And David called one of the young men and said, 'Go near, strike him down.' And he struck him and he died.

And David said to him, 'Your blood is on your head, for your mouth testified against you, saying, 'I killed the anointed of יהוה.''

And David lamented this lamentation over Sha'ul and over Yonatan his son.

And he said, 'To teach the sons of Yehudah the bow. Behold, it is written in the Book of Yashar.'

'The gazelle, O Yisra'el, on your high places is slain! How the mighty have fallen!'

'Do not tell in Gat, do not proclaim in the streets of Ashqelon, lest the daughters of the Pelishtim rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.'

'O mountains of Gilbo'a, let there be no dew, nor rain upon you, nor fields of offerings, for there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Sha'ul, not anointed with oil.'

'From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Yonatan did not turn back, and the sword of Sha'ul did not return empty.'

'Sha'ul and Yonatan, the beloved and the pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not separated. They were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.'

'Daughters of Yisra'el, weep for Sha'ul, who clothed you in scarlet with luxury, who put ornaments of gold on your clothing.'

'How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle! Yonatan, on your high places, is slain!'

'I am distressed for you, my brother Yonatan; you were very pleasant to me. Your love to me was more wonderful than the love of women.'

'How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war have perished!'
