And it happened when King Ḥizqiyahu heard, he tore his garments and covered himself with sackcloth, and he entered the house of יהוה.

And he sent Elyaqim, who was over the household, and Shevna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered in sackcloth, to Yeshayahu the prophet, son of Amots.

And they said to him, 'Thus says Ḥizqiyahu: This day is a day of distress, rebuke, and blasphemy, for children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to give birth.'

'Perhaps יהוה your Elohim will hear all the words of Ravshaqeh, whom the king of Assyria his master sent to reproach the living Elohim, and will convict him with the words which יהוה your Elohim has heard. And you shall pray for the remnant that is found.'

And the servants of King Ḥizqiyahu came to Yeshayahu.

And Yeshayahu said to them, 'Thus you shall say to your master: Thus says יהוה, Do not fear because of the words which you have heard, with which the young men of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.'

'Behold, I am putting a spirit in him, and he will hear a report and return to his land, and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his land.'

And Ravshaqeh returned and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he had heard that he had departed from Lakish.

And he heard concerning Tirhaqah, king of Kush, saying, 'Behold, he has come out to fight against you.' And he returned and sent messengers to Ḥizqiyahu, saying:

'Thus you shall say to Ḥizqiyahu, king of Yehudah, saying: Do not let your Elohim, in whom you trust, deceive you, saying, Yerushalayim will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.'

'Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, to utterly destroy them, and you will be delivered?'

'Did the elohim of the nations, whom my fathers destroyed, deliver them—Gozan, and Haran, and Reṣef, and the sons of Eden who were in Telassar?'

'Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sefarvayim, Hena, and Ivah?'

And Ḥizqiyahu took the letters from the hand of the messengers and read them. And he went up to the house of יהוה, and Ḥizqiyahu spread them out before יהוה.

And Ḥizqiyahu prayed before יהוה and said, 'יהוה, Elohim of Yisra'el, enthroned upon the cherubim, you are the Elohim, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made the heavens and the earth.'

'Incline, יהוה, your ear and hear; open, יהוה, your eyes and see, and hear the words of Sanḥeriv, whom he has sent to reproach the living Elohim.'

'Truly, יהוה, the kings of Assyria have devastated the nations and their lands.'

'And they put their elohim into the fire, for they were not elohim, but the work of human hands, wood and stone, and they destroyed them.'

'And now, יהוה our Elohim, save us, please, from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, יהוה, are Elohim alone.'

And Yeshayahu son of Amots sent to Ḥizqiyahu, saying, 'Thus says יהוה, Elohim of Yisra'el, concerning what you prayed to me about Sanḥeriv, king of Assyria, I have heard.'

'This is the word which יהוה has spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Tsiyon despises you, mocks you; the daughter of Yerushalayim shakes her head behind you.'

'Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? And against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Yisra'el!'

'Through your messengers you have reproached Adonai, and you said, 'With the multitude of my chariots I have ascended to the height of the mountains, to the remotest parts of Lebanon, and I will cut down its tall cedars, its choicest cypresses, and I will enter its farthest height, its forest of Carmel.''

'I have dug and drunk foreign waters, and with the sole of my feet I will dry up all the rivers of Mitsrayim.'

'Have you not heard from afar? I did this in days of old; I planned it in ancient times. Now I have brought it to pass, and it is for you to lay waste fortified cities into heaps of ruins.'

'And their inhabitants were short of hand; they were dismayed and ashamed. They became like grass of the field, and green vegetation, and grass of the roofs, and scorched grain before it grows.'

'And your dwelling and your going out and your coming in I know, and your raging against me.'

'Because you raged against me, and your arrogance has come up to my ears, I will put a hook in your nose and a bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way you came.'

'And this shall be the sign for you: This year you shall eat what grows by itself, and in the second year what springs from that, and in the third year you shall sow and reap, and plant vineyards and eat their fruit.'

'And the remnant that has escaped of the house of Yehudah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward.'

'For from Yerushalayim shall go forth a remnant, and survivors from Mount Tsiyon. The zeal of יהוה of hosts shall do this.'

'Therefore, thus says יהוה concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with a shield, nor cast up a siege rampart against it.'

'By the way he came, he shall return, and he shall not come into this city, declares יהוה.'

'For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for the sake of David my servant.'

And it happened on that night that the angel of יהוה went out and struck 185,000 in the camp of Assyria. And when they rose in the morning, behold, they were all dead bodies.

And Sanḥeriv, king of Assyria, departed and went and returned and dwelt in Ninveh.

And it happened, as he was worshiping in the house of Nisrok his elohim, that Adrammelek and Shareṣer, his sons, struck him down with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esar-ḥaddon his son reigned in his place.
