And it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Ela king of Yisra'el, that Ḥizqiyah son of Aḥaz king of Yehudah began to reign.

He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Yerushalayim. And the name of his mother was Aví daughter of Zekharyah.

And he did what was right in the eyes of יהוה, according to all that David his father had done.

He removed the high places, and shattered the pillars, and cut down the Asherah, and he beat into pieces the bronze serpent that Mosheh had made, because until those days the sons of Yisra'el had been burning incense to it, and he called it Neḥushtan.

He trusted in יהוה Elohim of Yisra'el, and after him there was none like him among all the kings of Yehudah, nor among those who were before him.

And he clung to יהוה; he did not turn aside from following him, and he kept his commandments, which יהוה commanded Mosheh.

And יהוה was with him; in all that he went out, he prospered. And he rebelled against the king of Ashshur, and did not serve him.

He struck down the Pelishtim, even to Azzah and its territory, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.

And it came to pass in the fourth year of King Ḥizqiyah, that is, the seventh year of Hoshea son of Ela king of Yisra'el, Shalmaneser king of Ashshur came up against Shomron, and besieged it.

And they captured it at the end of three years. In the sixth year of Ḥizqiyah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Yisra'el, Shomron was captured.

And the king of Ashshur deported Yisra'el to Ashshur, and settled them in Ḥalaḥ, and in Ḥavor, by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of Madai.

Because they did not listen to the voice of יהוה their Elohim, but transgressed his covenant, even all that Mosheh the servant of יהוה commanded, and they did not listen, nor did they do it.

And in the fourteenth year of King Ḥizqiyah, Sennacherib king of Ashshur came up against all the fortified cities of Yehudah, and captured them.

And King Ḥizqiyah of Yehudah sent to the king of Ashshur at Lakish, saying, 'I have sinned; turn back from me; whatever you impose on me, I will bear.' And the king of Ashshur imposed on Ḥizqiyah king of Yehudah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

And Ḥizqiyah gave all the silver that was found in the house of יהוה and in the treasuries of the king's house.

At that time, Ḥizqiyah cut off the doors of the temple of יהוה and the doorposts, which Ḥizqiyah king of Yehudah had overlaid, and gave them to the king of Ashshur.

And the king of Ashshur sent Tartan, and Rab-saris, and Rabshakeh from Lakish to King Ḥizqiyah with a great army to Yerushalayim. And they marched up and came to Yerushalayim, and they marched up and came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is on the highway of the fuller's field.

And they called to the king, and Eliakim son of Hilqiyah, who was over the household, and Shevnah the scribe, and Yo'aḥ son of Asaph the recorder, went out to them.

And Rabshakeh said to them, 'Speak now to Ḥizqiyah, Thus says the great king, the king of Ashshur, What is this confidence in which you trust?'

'You said, Indeed, it is mere words of the lips; counsel and strength for war. Now on whom have you relied, that you have rebelled against me?'

'Now behold, you have relied on the staff of this broken reed, on Mitsrayim, on which if a man leans, it will pierce his hand and go into it. So is Par'oh king of Mitsrayim to all who rely on him.'

'And if you say to me, We rely on יהוה our Elohim, is it not he whose high places and altars Ḥizqiyah has removed, and said to Yehudah and to Yerushalayim, Before this altar you shall worship in Yerushalayim?'

'And now, please make a wager with my master the king of Ashshur, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able to provide riders for them.'

'How then can you turn back the face of one of the least of my master's servants, and you rely on Mitsrayim for chariots and for horsemen?'

'And now, have I come up against this place without יהוה to destroy it? יהוה said to me, Go up against this land and destroy it.'

And Eliakim son of Hilqiyah, and Shevnah, and Yo'aḥ said to Rabshakeh, 'Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we are listening, and do not speak to us in Yehudahite in the ears of the people who are on the wall.'

And Rabshakeh said to them, 'Has my master sent me and you to speak these words only to your master and to you? Has he not sent me to the men who sit on the wall, to eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?'

And Rabshakeh stood and cried out in a loud voice in Yehudahite, and he spoke and said, 'Hear the words of the great king, the king of Ashshur.'

'Thus says the king, Let not Ḥizqiyah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you from his hand.'

'And let not Ḥizqiyah make you rely on יהוה, saying, יהוה will surely deliver us, and this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Ashshur.'

'Do not listen to Ḥizqiyah, for thus says the king of Ashshur: Make peace with me and come out to me, and eat each of his vine and each of his fig tree, and drink each of the waters of his cistern.

'Until I come and take you to a land like your land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive oil and honey, and you will live and not die. And do not listen to Ḥizqiyah, for he is misleading you, saying, יהוה will deliver us.'

'Did any of the gods of the nations deliver their land from the hand of the king of Ashshur?'

'Where are the gods of Ḥamat and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Shomron from my hand?'

'Who among all the gods of the lands has delivered their land from my hand, that יהוה should deliver Yerushalayim from my hand?'

'And the people were silent and did not answer him a word, for the king's command was, saying, Do not answer him.'

And Eliakim son of Hilqiyah, who was over the household, and Shevnah the scribe, and Yo'aḥ son of Asaph the recorder, came to Ḥizqiyah with their clothes torn, and they told him the words of Rabshakeh.
