And Rehava'am went to Shekhem, for to Shekhem all Yisra'el came to make him king.

And it happened, when Yerov'am son of Nevat heard, and he was in Mitsrayim, from whom he had fled from the face of Shelomoh the king, and Yerov'am returned from Mitsrayim.

And they sent and called him, and Yerov'am and all Yisra'el came, and they spoke to Rehava'am, saying:

Your father made our yoke heavy, and now, lighten from the service of your father, the heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.

And he said to them, 'Yet three days, and return to me.' And the people went.

And King Rehava'am consulted with the elders who had stood before Shelomoh his father while he was alive, saying, 'How do you advise to answer this people?'

And they spoke to him, saying, 'If you will be good to this people, and please them, and speak to them good words, they will be your servants all the days.'

And he abandoned the counsel of the elders which they had advised him, and he consulted with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.

And he said to them, 'What do you advise, that we may answer this people who spoke to me, saying, 'Lighten from the yoke which your father put on us'?'

And the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, 'Thus you shall say to the people who spoke to you, saying, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, and you, lighten from us.' Thus you shall say to them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.''

'And now, my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, and I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, and I will discipline you with scorpions.'

And Yerov'am and all the people came to Rehava'am on the third day, as the king had spoken, saying, 'Return to me on the third day.'

And the king answered them harshly, and King Rehava'am abandoned the counsel of the elders.

And he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, 'I will make your yoke heavier, and I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, and I will discipline you with scorpions.'

And the king did not listen to the people, for the matter was from יהוה, in order that יהוה might establish His word which He spoke by the hand of Aḥiyah the Shilonite to Yerov'am son of Nevat.

And all Yisra'el, when the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, 'What portion do we have in David? And we have no inheritance in the son of Yishai. To your tents, Yisra'el! Now see to your own house, David!' And all Yisra'el went to their tents.

And the sons of Yisra'el who lived in the cities of Yehudah, Rehava'am reigned over them.

And King Rehava'am sent Hadoram, who was over the forced labor, and the sons of Yisra'el stoned him with stones, and he died. And King Rehava'am hurried to get into his chariot to flee to Yerushalayim.

And Yisra'el rebelled against the house of David until this day.
