And the word of Shemu'el was to all Yisra'el. And Yisra'el went out to meet the Pelishtim for war, and they encamped by the Stone of Help, and the Pelishtim encamped in Afek.

And the Pelishtim arrayed themselves against Yisra'el, and the battle spread out, and Yisra'el was struck down before the Pelishtim, and they struck down in the battle on the field about four thousand men.

And the people came to the camp, and the elders of Yisra'el said, 'Why has יהוה struck us down today before the Pelishtim? Let us take from Shiloh the Ark of the Covenant of יהוה, and let it come into our midst, and let it save us from the hand of our enemies.'

And the people sent to Shiloh, and they took from there the Ark of the Covenant of יהוה of Hosts, who dwells among the cherubim, and there were the two sons of Eli, Ḥofni and Pineḥas, with the Ark of the Covenant of Elohim.

And it happened when the Ark of the Covenant of יהוה came into the camp, and all Yisra'el shouted a great shout, and the earth resounded.

And the Pelishtim heard the sound of the shout, and they said, 'What is this great sound of shouting in the camp of the Hebrews?' And they knew that the Ark of יהוה had come to the camp.

And the Pelishtim feared, for they said, 'Elohim has come into the camp.' And they said, 'Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before.'

Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty Elohim? These are the Elohim who struck Mitsrayim with every plague in the wilderness.

Take courage and be men, Pelishtim, lest you become slaves to the Hebrews, as they were slaves to you. And be men and fight.'

And the Pelishtim fought, and Yisra'el was struck down, and they fled, each man to his tent, and the slaughter was very great, and about thirty thousand foot soldiers of Yisra'el fell.

And the Ark of Elohim was taken, and the two sons of Eli, Ḥofni and Pineḥas, died.

And a man of Binyamin ran from the battle, and he came to Shiloh on that day, and his garments were torn, and dust was on his head.

And he came, and behold, Eli was sitting on the seat by the road, watching, for his heart was trembling concerning the Ark of Elohim. And the man came to tell the city, and the whole city cried out.

And Eli heard the sound of the outcry, and he said, 'What is this sound of tumult?' And the man hurried and came and told Eli.

And Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were dim, and he could not see.

And the man said to Eli, 'I am the one who came from the battle, and I fled from the battle today.' And he said, 'What happened, my son?'

And the messenger answered and said, 'Yisra'el fled before the Pelishtim, and also a great slaughter occurred among the people, and also your two sons died, Ḥofni and Pineḥas, and the Ark of Elohim was taken.'

And it happened when he mentioned the Ark of Elohim, that he fell backward from off the seat beside the gate, and his neck was broken, and he died, for the man was old and heavy, and he had judged Yisra'el for forty years.

And his daughter-in-law, the wife of Pineḥas, was pregnant, about to give birth. And she heard the news that the Ark of Elohim was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead. And she stooped and gave birth, for her pains turned upon her.

And as she was dying, those standing by her said, 'Do not fear, for you have borne a son.' But she did not answer, nor did she pay attention.

And she named the boy Ikabod, saying, 'The glory has departed from Yisra'el,' because the Ark of Elohim was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

And she said, 'The glory has departed from Yisra'el, for the Ark of Elohim was taken.'
