And David went up from there and sat in the strongholds of En-gedi.

And it happened when Sha'ul returned from pursuing the Pelishtim, and they told him, saying, 'Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.'

And Sha'ul took three thousand chosen men from all Yisra'el, and went to seek David and his men on the rocks of the wild goats.

And he came to the sheepfolds on the way, and there was a cave, and Sha'ul went in to cover his feet. And David and his men were in the recesses of the cave, sitting.

And the men of David said to him, 'Behold, this is the day which יהוה said to you, 'Behold, I am giving your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as is good in your eyes.'' And David arose and cut the corner of Sha'ul's cloak secretly.

And it happened after this, that David's heart struck him because he had cut the cloak belonging to Sha'ul.

And he said to his men, 'Far be it from me by יהוה that I should do this thing to my master, to יהוה's anointed, to send forth my hand against him, because he is יהוה's anointed.'

And David persuaded his men with these words, and did not permit them to rise up against Sha'ul. And Sha'ul arose from the cave and went on the way.

And David arose after this, and went out from the cave, and called after Sha'ul, saying, 'My master the king!' And Sha'ul looked behind him, and David bowed himself with his face to the earth and prostrated himself.

And David said to Sha'ul, 'Why do you listen to the words of men, saying, 'Behold, David seeks your harm'?

Behold, this day your eyes have seen how יהוה gave you today into my hand in the cave, and I said I would kill you, but I spared you. And I said, 'I will not send forth my hand against my master, because he is יהוה's anointed.'

And behold, my father, also see the corner of your cloak in my hand, for when I cut the corner of your cloak, I did not kill you. Know and see that there is no evil or rebellion in my hand, and I have not sinned against you, yet you hunt my life to take it.

יהוה will judge between me and you, and יהוה will avenge me against you, but my hand shall not be upon you.

As the ancient proverb says, 'From the wicked comes wickedness,' but my hand shall not be upon you.

After whom has the king of Yisra'el come out? After whom are you pursuing? After a dead dog? After a single flea?

And יהוה will be the judge, and He will judge between me and you, and He will see and plead my case, and will judge me from your hand.

And it happened when David finished speaking these words to Sha'ul, that Sha'ul said, 'Is this your voice, my son David?' And Sha'ul lifted up his voice and wept.

And he said to David, 'You are more righteous than I, because you have rewarded me with good, and I have rewarded you with evil.'

And you have shown today the good you have done to me, how יהוה shut me up into your hand, and you did not kill me.

And if a man finds his enemy, he will let him go on his way in peace. And יהוה will reward you with good for what you have done to me this day.

And now, behold, I know that you will surely reign, and the kingdom of Yisra'el will be established in your hand.

And now, swear to me by יהוה that you will not cut off my offspring after me, and that you will not destroy my name from my father's house.

And David swore to Sha'ul, and Sha'ul went to his house, and David and his men went up to the stronghold.
