And יהוה spoke to Shemu'el, saying, 'How long will you mourn for Sha'ul, seeing I have rejected him from ruling over Yisra'el? Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Yishai the Bethlehemite, because I have seen for Myself a king among his sons.'

And Shemu'el said, 'How will I go? And Sha'ul will hear and kill me.' And יהוה said, 'Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to יהוה.''

'And you shall invite Yishai to the sacrifice, and I will make known to you what you shall do, and you shall anoint for Me the one whom I tell you.'

And Shemu'el did what יהוה spoke, and he came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city trembled at his coming, and they said, 'Is your coming peaceful?'

And he said, 'Peaceful. I have come to sacrifice to יהוה. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.' And he consecrated Yishai and his sons, and he invited them to the sacrifice.

And it happened when they came, and he saw Eli'av, and he said, 'Surely before יהוה is His anointed.'

But יהוה said to Shemu'el, 'Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For it is not as man sees, for man sees for the eyes, but יהוה sees for the heart.'

And Yishai called Avinadav, and he brought him before Shemu'el. And he said, 'Neither has יהוה chosen this one.'

And Yishai brought Shamah, and he said, 'Neither has יהוה chosen this one.'

And Yishai brought seven of his sons before Shemu'el, and Shemu'el said to Yishai, 'יהוה has not chosen these.'

And Shemu'el said to Yishai, 'Are all the young men finished?' And he said, 'The youngest is still left, and behold, he is shepherding the flock.' And Shemu'el said to Yishai, 'Send and bring him, because we will not sit down until he comes here.'

And he sent and brought him. And he was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and good appearance. And יהוה said, 'Arise, anoint him, for this is he.'

And Shemu'el took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of יהוה rushed upon David from that day forward. And Shemu'el arose and went to Ramah.

And the Spirit of יהוה departed from Sha'ul, and a distressing spirit from יהוה troubled him.

And Sha'ul's servants said to him, 'Behold now, a distressing spirit from Elohim is troubling you.'

'Let our Adonai now command your servants before you, let them seek a man who knows how to play the lyre, and it will be that when the distressing spirit from Elohim is upon you, he will play with his hand, and it will be well for you.'

And Sha'ul said to his servants, 'See now, find me a man who plays well, and bring him to me.'

And one of the young men answered and said, 'Behold, I have seen a son of Yishai the Bethlehemite, who knows how to play, and is a mighty warrior, and a man of war, and discerning in speech, and a handsome man, and יהוה is with him.'

And Sha'ul sent messengers to Yishai and said, 'Send to me David your son, who is with the flock.'

And Yishai took a donkey of bread, and a skin of wine, and a young goat, and he sent them by the hand of David his son to Sha'ul.

And David came to Sha'ul and stood before him, and he loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer.

And Sha'ul sent to Yishai, saying, 'Let David now stand before me, for he has found favor in my eyes.'

And it happened whenever the spirit from Elohim was upon Sha'ul, David would take the lyre and play with his hand, and relief would come to Sha'ul, and it would be well for him, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.
