And Shemu'el said to Sha'ul, 'יהוה sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Yisra'el, and now listen to the voice of the words of יהוה.'

'Thus says יהוה Tzeva'ot, 'I have remembered what 'Amaleq did to Yisra'el, how he set himself against him on the way when he came up from Mitsrayim.'

'Now go and strike 'Amaleq and devote everything that belongs to him, and do not have pity on him, and you shall kill from man to woman, from infant to suckling, from ox to sheep, from camel to donkey.'

'And Sha'ul mustered the people and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers, and ten thousand men of Yehudah.'

'And Sha'ul came to the city of 'Amaleq and lay in wait in the valley.'

'And Sha'ul said to the Qeyni, 'Go, turn aside, get out from among the 'Amaleqite, lest I sweep you away with him, for you showed kindness to all the children of Yisra'el when they came up from Mitsrayim.' And the Qeyni turned aside from among the 'Amaleqite.

'And Sha'ul struck the 'Amaleqite from Ḥavilah as you go to Shur, which is east of Mitsrayim.'

'And he captured 'Agag king of 'Amaleq alive, and he devoted all the people to destruction with the edge of the sword.'

'And Sha'ul and the people spared 'Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fatlings, and of the lambs, and all that was good, and they were unwilling to devote them to destruction. But everything worthless and weak they devoted to destruction.'

'And the word of יהוה came to Shemu'el, saying:'

'I regret that I have made Sha'ul king, for he has turned back from following Me, and My words he has not carried out.' And Shemu'el was angry, and he cried out to יהוה all night.'

'And Shemu'el rose early to meet Sha'ul in the morning, and it was told to Shemu'el, saying, 'Sha'ul has come to Karmel, and behold, he has set up a monument for himself, and he has turned and gone down to Gilgal.''

'And Shemu'el came to Sha'ul, and Sha'ul said to him, 'Blessed are you of יהוה! I have carried out the word of יהוה.''

'And Shemu'el said, 'And what is this sound of sheep in my ears, and the sound of oxen which I am hearing?''

'And Sha'ul said, 'From the 'Amaleqite they brought them, for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, in order to sacrifice to יהוה your Elohim, and the rest we have devoted to destruction.''

'And Shemu'el said to Sha'ul, 'Be silent, and I will tell you what יהוה spoke to me tonight.' And he said to him, 'Speak.''

'And Shemu'el said, 'Is it not so, that when you were small in your own eyes, you became the head of the tribes of Yisra'el? And יהוה anointed you king over Yisra'el.'

'And יהוה sent you on a mission and said, 'Go and devote the sinners, the 'Amaleqite, and fight against them until they are finished.''

'And why did you not obey the voice of יהוה? But you swooped down on the spoil and did evil in the eyes of יהוה?'

'And Sha'ul said to Shemu'el, 'I have obeyed the voice of יהוה, and I have gone the way which יהוה sent me, and I have brought 'Agag king of 'Amaleq, and I have devoted 'Amaleq to destruction.'

'But the people took from the spoil sheep and oxen, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrifice to יהוה your Elohim in Gilgal.'

'And Shemu'el said, 'Does יהוה delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of יהוה? Behold, obeying is better than sacrifice, and to listen is better than the fat of rams.'

'For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and stubbornness is like the sin of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of יהוה, He has also rejected you from being king.'

'And Sha'ul said to Shemu'el, 'I have sinned, because I have transgressed the command of יהוה and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.'

'And now, please pardon my sin, and turn back with me, and I will bow down to יהוה.'

'And Shemu'el said to Sha'ul, 'I will not turn back with you, for you have rejected the word of יהוה, and יהוה has rejected you from being king over Yisra'el.'

'And Shemu'el turned to go, and he grasped the edge of his cloak, and it tore.'

'And Shemu'el said to him, 'יהוה has torn the kingdom of Yisra'el from you today, and has given it to your neighbor who is better than you.'

'And also the Glory of Yisra'el will not lie nor will He change His mind, for He is not a man, that He should change His mind.'

'And he said, 'I have sinned. Now, please honor me before the elders of my people and before Yisra'el, and turn back with me, and I will bow down to יהוה your Elohim.'

'And Shemu'el turned back after Sha'ul, and Sha'ul bowed down to יהוה.'

'And Shemu'el said, 'Bring to me 'Agag king of 'Amaleq.' And 'Agag came to him with hesitation, and 'Agag said, 'Surely the bitterness of death is turned away.'

'And Shemu'el said, 'As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.' And Shemu'el hewed 'Agag in pieces before יהוה in Gilgal.'

'And Shemu'el went to Rama, and Sha'ul went up to his house in Giv'at Sha'ul.'

'And Shemu'el did not see Sha'ul again until the day of his death, because Shemu'el mourned for Sha'ul, and יהוה regretted that He had made Sha'ul king over Yisra'el.'
