And Naḥash the Ammonite went up and encamped against Yaveish Gil'ad, and all the men of Yaveish said to Naḥash, 'Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.'

And Naḥash the Ammonite said to them, 'On this condition I will make a covenant with you: by plucking out every right eye, and I will lay this as a reproach on all Yisra'el.'

And the elders of Yaveish said to him, 'Give us seven days' respite, and we will send messengers throughout all the territory of Yisra'el, and if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you.'

And the messengers came to Giv'at Sha'ul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people, and all the people lifted up their voices and wept.

And behold, Sha'ul was coming after the oxen from the field, and Sha'ul said, 'What is wrong with the people that they are weeping?' And they told him the words of the men of Yaveish.

And the Spirit of Elohim came mightily upon Sha'ul when he heard these words, and his anger burned greatly.

And he took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the territory of Yisra'el by the hand of the messengers, saying, 'Whoever does not go out after Sha'ul and after Shemu'el, so shall it be done to his oxen.' And the fear of יהוה fell on the people, and they came out as one man.

And he mustered them in Bezeq, and the sons of Yisra'el were three hundred thousand, and the men of Yehudah thirty thousand.

And they said to the messengers who came, 'Thus you shall say to the men of Yaveish Gil'ad: Tomorrow, by the heat of the sun, salvation will come to you.' And the messengers came and told the men of Yaveish, and they rejoiced.

And the men of Yaveish said, 'Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do to us whatever is good in your eyes.'

And it was the next day, and Sha'ul put the people into three companies, and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and struck down Ammon until the heat of the day. And the survivors were scattered, and not two of them were left together.

And the people said to Shemu'el, 'Who is it that said Sha'ul should reign over us? Give the men, and we will put them to death.'

And Sha'ul said, 'No man shall be put to death this day, for today יהוה has worked salvation in Yisra'el.'

And Shemu'el said to the people, 'Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingship there.'

And all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Sha'ul king before יהוה in Gilgal, and there they sacrificed peace offerings before יהוה, and there Sha'ul and all the men of Yisra'el rejoiced greatly.
