Shelomoh formed an alliance by marriage with Par'oh, king of Mitsrayim, and took Par'oh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he finished building his house, and the house of יהוה, and the wall around Yerushalayim.

Only the people were sacrificing on the high places, because a house for the name of יהוה had not been built until those days.

Shelomoh loved יהוה, walking in the statutes of David his father; only on the high places he was sacrificing and burning incense.

The king went to Giv'on to sacrifice there, for it was the great high place; Shelomoh offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.

In Giv'on, יהוה appeared to Shelomoh in a dream by night, and Elohim said, 'Ask what I will give you.'

And Shelomoh said, 'You showed great kindness to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you; and you have kept for him this great kindness, and you have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.'

'And now, יהוה my Elohim, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, and I am a young boy; I do not know how to go out or come in.'

'And your servant is among your people whom you have chosen, a great people, which cannot be numbered or counted because of their multitude.'

'So give your servant an understanding heart to judge your people, to discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this great people of yours?'

The thing pleased Adonai, that Shelomoh had asked this thing.

And Elohim said to him, 'Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself long life, nor have you asked for riches, nor have you asked for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself discernment to hear judgment,'

'Behold, I have done according to your words; behold, I have given you a wise and discerning heart, so that there has been no one like you before you, nor will there be anyone like you after you.'

'And also, what you have not asked, I have given you, both riches and honor, so that there will be no man like you among the kings all your days.'

'And if you walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David your father walked, then I will lengthen your days.'

Shelomoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream. He came to Yerushalayim and stood before the ark of the covenant of Adonai, and offered burnt offerings, and made peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.

Then two women who were prostitutes came to the king and stood before him.

And one woman said, 'Please, my Adonai, I and this woman live in one house, and I gave birth with her in the house.'

'And it happened on the third day after I gave birth, that this woman also gave birth, and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, only the two of us were in the house.'

'And the son of this woman died during the night, because she lay on him.'

'And she got up in the middle of the night, and took my son from beside me, while your maidservant was sleeping, and laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead son in my bosom.'

'And I got up in the morning to nurse my son, and behold, he was dead; and when I looked at him in the morning, behold, he was not my son whom I had borne.'

And the other woman said, 'No, but my son is the living one, and your son is the dead one.' And this one said, 'No, but your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.' And they argued before the king.

And the king said, 'This one says, "This is my son, the living one, and your son is the dead one," and this one says, "No, but your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one."'

And the king said, 'Bring me a sword.' And they brought a sword before the king.

And the king said, 'Cut the living child in two, and give half to one and half to the other.'

And the woman whose son was the living one said to the king, because her compassion was stirred for her son, 'Please, my Adonai, give her the living child, and do not kill him.' But the other said, 'It shall be neither mine nor yours; cut it.'

And the king answered and said, 'Give her the living child, and do not kill him; she is his mother.'

And all Yisra'el heard of the judgment which the king had judged, and they feared the king, because they saw that the wisdom of Elohim was within him to do justice.
