And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, 'So may the elohim do, and so may they add, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like the life of one of them.'

And he saw, and he arose, and he went for his life, and he came to Beersheba, which is in Yehudah, and he left his young man there.

And he himself went in the wilderness a day's journey, and he came and sat under a broom tree, and he asked for his life to die, and he said, 'It is enough now, יהוה; take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.'

And he lay down and slept under one broom tree, and behold, an angel touched him, and he said to him, 'Arise, eat.'

And he looked, and behold, at his head was a cake of baked stones and a jar of water, and he ate and he drank, and he returned and lay down.

And the angel of יהוה returned a second time, and he touched him, and he said, 'Arise, eat, for the journey is too much for you.'

And he arose, and he ate, and he drank, and he went in the strength of that eating forty days and forty nights to the mountain of the Elohim, Horeb.

And he came there to the cave, and he lodged there, and behold, the word of יהוה to him, and he said to him, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?'

And he said, 'I have been very zealous for יהוה, Elohim of hosts, for the בני Yisra'el have forsaken your covenant, they have torn down your altars, and they have killed your prophets with the sword, and I alone am left, and they seek my life to take it.'

And he said, 'Go out and stand on the mountain before יהוה,' and behold, יהוה was passing by, and a great and strong wind was tearing apart mountains and shattering rocks before יהוה; not in the wind was יהוה, and after the wind, an earthquake; not in the earthquake was יהוה.

And after the earthquake, a fire; not in the fire was יהוה, and after the fire, a still small voice.

And it happened when Elijah heard, and he covered his face with his cloak, and he went out, and he stood at the entrance of the cave, and behold, a voice to him, and it said, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?'

And he said, 'I have been very zealous for יהוה, Elohim of hosts, for the בני Yisra'el have forsaken your covenant, they have torn down your altars, and they have killed your prophets with the sword, and I alone am left, and they seek my life to take it.'

And יהוה said to him, 'Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and you shall come and anoint Hazael as king over Aram.

And you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Yisra'el, and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Hevel-Meholah as a prophet in your place.'

And it shall be, the one who escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall kill, and the one who escapes the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall kill.

And I will leave in Yisra'el seven thousand, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.'

And he went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat, and he was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. And Elijah passed by him and threw his cloak on him.

And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and he said, 'Please let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will go after you.' And he said to him, 'Go, return, for what have I done to you?'

And he returned from after him, and he took the yoke of oxen and slaughtered them, and with the equipment of the oxen he cooked the meat, and he gave to the people, and they ate. And he arose and went after Elijah and served him.
