And it happened, many days, and the word of יהוה was to Eliyahu, in the third year, saying, 'Go, show yourself to Aḥav, and I will give rain upon the face of the ground.'

And Eliyahu went to show himself to Aḥav, and the famine was severe in Shomron.

And Aḥav called Ovad'yah, who was over the house, and Ovad'yah was very fearing of יהוה.

And it happened, when Yizre'el was cutting off the prophets of יהוה, that Ovad'yah took one hundred prophets, and he hid them, fifty men in a cave, and he sustained them with bread and water.

And Aḥav said to Ovad'yah, 'Go in the land to all the springs of water, and to all the streams. Perhaps we will find grass, and we will keep alive horses and mules, and we will not cut off from the livestock.'

And they divided for themselves the land to pass through it. Aḥav went on one way by himself, and Ovad'yah went on one way by himself.

And it happened, Ovad'yah was on the way, and behold, Eliyahu to meet him. And he recognized him, and he fell on his face, and he said, 'Is it you, my master Eliyahu?'

And he said to him, 'I am. Go, tell your master, 'Behold, Eliyahu is here.''

And he said, 'What have I sinned, that you are giving your servant into the hand of Aḥav to kill me?'

'As יהוה your Elohim lives, if there is a nation and a kingdom where my master did not send there to seek you, and they said, 'He is not here,' he made the kingdom and the nation swear that they did not find you.'

'And now you say, 'Go, tell your master, 'Behold, Eliyahu is here.''

'And it will happen, I will go from you, and the spirit of יהוה will carry you to a place I do not know. And I will come to tell Aḥav, and he will not find you, and he will kill me. And your servant fears יהוה from my youth.'

'Was it not told to my master what I did when Yizre'el was killing the prophets of יהוה? That I hid one hundred prophets of יהוה, fifty men in a cave, and I sustained them with bread and water?'

'And now you say, 'Go, tell your master, 'Behold, Eliyahu is here,' and he will kill me.''

And Eliyahu said, 'As יהוה of hosts lives, before whom I stand, surely today I will show myself to him.'

And Ovad'yah went to meet Aḥav, and he told him. And Aḥav went to meet Eliyahu.

And it happened, when Aḥav saw Eliyahu, that Aḥav said to him, 'Is it you, the troubler of Yisra'el?'

And he said, 'I have not troubled Yisra'el, but you and your father's house, because you have abandoned the commandments of יהוה, and you have gone after the Ba'alim.'

'And now, send and gather to me all Yisra'el to Mount Karmel, and the prophets of the Ba'al, four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah, four hundred, who eat from Yizre'el's table.'

And Aḥav sent to all the children of Yisra'el, and he gathered the prophets to Mount Karmel.

And Eliyahu approached all the people and said, 'How long will you limp between two opinions? If יהוה is the Elohim, go after him. But if the Ba'al, go after him.' And the people did not answer him a word.

And Eliyahu said to the people, 'I alone am left, a prophet of יהוה, but the prophets of the Ba'al are four hundred and fifty men.'

'And let them give us two bulls, and let them choose for themselves one bull, and let them cut it up, and let them place it on the wood, and let them not put fire. And I will do the one bull, and I will place it on the wood, and I will not put fire.'

'And you will call in the name of your elohim, and I will call in the name of יהוה. And it will be, the Elohim who answers with fire, he is the Elohim.' And all the people answered and said, 'The matter is good.'

And Eliyahu said to the prophets of the Ba'al, 'Choose for yourselves one bull, and do it first, for you are many. And call in the name of your elohim, and do not put fire.'

And they took the bull which he gave them, and they did it. And they called in the name of the Ba'al from morning until noon, saying, 'Ba'al, answer us!' And there was no voice, and no answer. And they leaped upon the altar which he made.

And it happened at noon, and Eliyahu mocked them, and said, 'Call with a loud voice, for he is an elohim. For he is in thought, and he is in pursuit, and he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and will wake.'

And they called with a loud voice, and they cut themselves according to their custom with swords and with spears, until blood poured on them.

And it happened, as noon passed, and they prophesied until the offering was brought up. And there was no voice, and no answer, and no one paid attention.

And Eliyahu said to all the people, 'Come near to me.' And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of יהוה that was ruined.

And Eliyahu took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Ya'aqov, to whom the word of יהוה came, saying, 'Yisra'el will be your name.'

And he built with the stones an altar in the name of יהוה, and he made a trench around the altar, as large as two seahs of seed.

And he arranged the wood, and he cut up the bull, and he placed it on the wood.

And he said, 'Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.' And he said, 'Do it again.' And they did it again. And he said, 'Do it a third time.' And they did it a third time.

And the water went around the altar, and even the trench he filled with water.

And it happened, as the offering was brought up, that Eliyahu the prophet approached and said, 'יהוה, Elohim of Avraham, Yitsḥaq, and Yisra'el, today it will be known that you are Elohim in Yisra'el, and that I am your servant, and by your word I have done all these things.'

'Answer me, יהוה, answer me, and let this people know that you are יהוה the Elohim, and that you have turned their heart backward.'

And the fire of יהוה fell, and it consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and the water that was in the trench, it licked up.

And all the people saw, and they fell on their faces, and they said, 'יהוה, he is the Elohim! יהוה, he is the Elohim!'

And Eliyahu said to them, 'Seize the prophets of the Ba'al! Let not one of them escape!' And they seized them, and Eliyahu brought them down to the stream of Qishon, and he slaughtered them there.

And Eliyahu said to Aḥav, 'Go up, eat and drink, for the sound of the abundance of the rain.'

And Aḥav went up to eat and to drink. And Eliyahu went up to the top of Karmel, and he bowed himself to the ground, and he put his face between his knees.

And he said to his servant, 'Go up now, look toward the sea.' And he went up and he looked, and he said, 'There is nothing.' And he said, 'Go back seven times.'

And it happened the seventh time, and he said, 'Behold, a small cloud like a man's hand is rising from the sea.' And he said, 'Go, tell Aḥav, 'Harness and go down, and the rain will not stop you.''

And it happened, until then and until then, and the heavens became dark with clouds and wind, and there was great rain. And Aḥav harnessed, and went to Yizre'el.

And the hand of יהוה was upon Eliyahu, and he girded up his loins, and he ran before Aḥav until the arrival at Yizre'el.
