And behold, a man of Elohim came from Yehudah by the word of יהוה to Beit-El, and Yarov'am was standing by the altar to offer incense.

And he cried out against the altar by the word of יהוה and said, 'Altar, altar, thus says יהוה, 'Behold, a son is born to the house of David, Yoshiyahu is his name. And he will sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who offer incense on you, and human bones they will burn on you.''

And he gave a sign on that day, saying, 'This is the sign which יהוה has spoken: Behold, the altar is torn down and the ashes are poured out from it.'

And it happened when the king heard the word of the man of Elohim, which he cried out against the altar in Beit-El, that Yarov'am stretched out his hand from beside the altar, saying, 'Seize him!' And his hand, which he stretched out against him, withered, and he could not bring it back to himself.

And the altar was torn down and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of Elohim gave by the word of יהוה.

And the king answered and said to the man of Elohim, 'Entreat the face of יהוה your Elohim and pray for me, that my hand may return to me.' And the man of Elohim entreated the face of יהוה, and the king's hand returned to him and became as it was before.

And the king spoke to the man of Elohim, 'Come with me to the house and eat bread, and I will give you a gift.'

And the man of Elohim said to the king, 'If you give me half your house, I will not go with you, and I will not eat bread or drink water in this place.'

For thus יהוה commanded me by the word, saying, 'You shall not eat bread, nor shall you drink water, and you shall not return by the way you came.'

And he went by another way and did not return by the way he came to Beit-El.

And a certain old prophet lived in Beit-El, and his son came and told him all the deed which the man of Elohim had done that day in Beit-El, the words which he spoke to the king. And they told them to their father.

And their father spoke to them, 'Which way did he go?' And his sons saw the way the man of Elohim who came from Yehudah had gone.

And he said to his sons, 'Saddle the donkey for me.' And they saddled the donkey for him, and he rode on it.

And he went after the man of Elohim and found him sitting under an oak tree. And he said to him, 'Are you the man of Elohim who came from Yehudah?' And he said, 'I am.'

And he said to him, 'Come with me to the house and eat bread.'

And he said, 'I cannot return with you or go with you, and I will not eat bread or drink water with you in this place.'

For a word spoke to me by the word of יהוה, saying, 'You shall not eat bread, nor shall you drink water there; you shall not return by the way you went.'

And he said to him, 'I also am a prophet like you, and a messenger spoke to me by the word of יהוה, saying, 'Bring him back with you to your house, and let him eat bread and drink water.'' He lied to him.

And he returned with him and ate bread in his house, and he drank water.

And it happened as they sat at the table, that the word of יהוה came to the prophet whom he had brought back.

And he cried out to the man of Elohim who came from Yehudah, saying, 'Thus says יהוה, 'Because you were rebellious against the word of יהוה and did not keep the command which יהוה your Elohim commanded you,'

'and you returned and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you, 'Do not eat bread and do not drink water,' your body shall not come to the grave of your fathers.'

And it happened after he ate bread and after he drank, that he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back.

And he went, and a lion found him on the way and killed him. And his body was thrown on the way, and the donkey stood beside it, and the lion stood beside the carcass.

And behold, men passed by and saw the carcass thrown on the way, and the lion standing beside the carcass. And they came and spoke in the city where the old prophet lived.

And the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard, and he said, 'He is the man of Elohim who was rebellious against the word of יהוה, and יהוה gave him to the lion, and it broke him and killed him, according to the word of יהוה which he spoke to him.'

And he spoke to his sons, saying, 'Saddle the donkey for me.' And they saddled it.

And he went and found his body thrown on the way, and the donkey and the lion standing beside the carcass. The lion did not eat the carcass, nor did it break the donkey.

And the prophet lifted the body of the man of Elohim and laid it on the donkey, and brought it back. And he came to the city of the old prophet to mourn and to bury him.

And he laid his body in his grave, and they mourned over him, 'Alas, my brother!'

And it happened after he buried him, that he said to his sons, 'When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of Elohim is buried; beside his bones lay my bones.'

For the word which he cried out by the word of יהוה against the altar in Beit-El, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Shomron, will surely come to pass.

After this event, Yarov'am did not turn from his evil way, but returned and made from the common people priests of high places; whoever desired, he consecrated him, and he became a priest of high places.

And it happened because of this event, it was for the sin of the house of Yarov'am, and for its cutting off and destruction from the face of the earth.
