And Rehava'am went to Shkhem, for to Shkhem all Yisra'el came to make him king.

And it happened, when Yaravam, son of Nevat, heard, and he was still in Mitsrayim, whom he had fled from the face of King Shelomoh, and Yaravam sat in Mitsrayim.

And they sent and called him, Yaravam, and all the assembly of Yisra'el came, and they spoke to Rehava'am, saying:

Your father made our yoke heavy, and you now lighten from the hard service of your father and from his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.

And he said to them, 'Go yet three days, and return to me.' And the people went.

And King Rehava'am consulted with the elders who had stood before Shelomoh his father while he was alive, saying, 'How do you advise to answer this people?'

And they spoke to him, saying, 'If today you will be a servant to this people and serve them and answer them, and speak good words to them, they will be your servants all the days.'

And he abandoned the counsel of the elders which they had advised him, and he consulted with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.

And he said to them, 'What do you advise, and we will answer this people who spoke to me, saying, Lighten from the yoke which your father put on us?'

And the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, 'Thus you shall say to this people who spoke to you, saying, Your father made our yoke heavy, and you lighten from us. Thus you shall say to them: My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.'

'And now, my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, and I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, and I will discipline you with scorpions.'

And Yaravam and all the people came to Rehava'am on the third day, as the king had spoken, saying, 'Return to me on the third day.'

And the king answered the people harshly, and he abandoned the counsel of the elders which they had advised him.

And he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, 'My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, and I will discipline you with scorpions.'

And the king did not listen to the people, for the matter was from יהוה, in order to establish his word which יהוה had spoken by the hand of Aḥiyah the Shilonite to Yaravam son of Nevat.

And all Yisra'el saw that the king did not listen to them, and the people answered the king, saying, 'What portion do we have in David? And we have no inheritance in the son of Yishai. To your tents, Yisra'el! Now see to your own house, David!' And Yisra'el went to their tents.

But the sons of Yisra'el who lived in the cities of Yehudah, Rehava'am reigned over them.

And King Rehava'am sent Adoram, who was over the forced labor, and all Yisra'el stoned him with stones, and he died. And King Rehava'am made himself strong to ascend in the chariot to flee to Yerushalayim.

And Yisra'el rebelled against the house of David until this day.

And it happened, when all Yisra'el heard that Yaravam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly, and they made him king over all Yisra'el. There was none who followed the house of David except the tribe of Yehudah alone.

And Rehava'am came to Yerushalayim, and he gathered all the house of Yehudah and the tribe of Binyamin, one hundred and eighty thousand chosen men, who were warriors, to fight against the house of Yisra'el, to bring back the kingdom to Rehava'am son of Shelomoh.

And the word of Elohim came to Shmaya, the man of Elohim, saying:

'Speak to Rehava'am son of Shelomoh, king of Yehudah, and to all the house of Yehudah and Binyamin, and to the rest of the people, saying:'

'Thus says יהוה: You shall not go up, nor shall you fight against your brothers, the sons of Yisra'el. Return each to his house, for this matter is from me.' And they heard the word of יהוה, and they returned to go according to the word of יהוה.

And Yaravam built Shkhem in the hill country of Efrayim, and he lived in it, and he went out from there and built Penu'el.

And Yaravam said in his heart, 'Now the kingdom will return to the house of David.'

'If this people goes up to offer sacrifices in the house of יהוה in Yerushalayim, then the heart of this people will turn back to their Adonai, to Rehava'am king of Yehudah, and they will kill me, and they will return to Rehava'am king of Yehudah.'

And the king consulted, and he made two golden calves, and he said to them, 'It is too much for you to go up to Yerushalayim. Behold your elohim, Yisra'el, who brought you up from the land of Mitsrayim.'

And he set up one in Beit-El, and the other he put in Dan.

And this thing became a sin, and the people went before the one as far as Dan.

And he made houses of high places, and he made priests from all the people, who were not from the sons of Levi.

And Yaravam instituted a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast which is in Yehudah. And he went up to the altar; thus he did in Beit-El, to sacrifice to the calves which he had made. And he stationed in Beit-El the priests of the high places which he had made.

And he went up to the altar which he had made in Beit-El on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month which he devised from his own heart. And he instituted a feast for the sons of Yisra'el, and he went up to the altar to offer incense.
