In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of יהוה came by the hand of Ḥaggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Yehudah, and to Yehoshua son of Yehotzadak, the high priest, saying:

Thus says יהוה of hosts, saying, This people says, 'The time has not come, the time for the house of יהוה to be built.'

And the word of יהוה came by the hand of Ḥaggai the prophet, saying:

Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this house is ruined?

And now, thus says יהוה of hosts, Set your heart on your ways.

You have sown much, and brought in little; you eat, but not to satisfaction; you drink, but not to drunkenness; you clothe yourselves, but not for warmth; and he who earns wages earns wages into a pierced purse.

Thus says יהוה of hosts, Set your heart on your ways.

Go up to the mountain and bring wood, and build the house, and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, says יהוה.

You looked for much, and behold, it came to little; and you brought it to the house, and I blew on it. Why? says יהוה of hosts. Because of my house, which is ruined, while each of you runs to his own house.

Therefore, because of you, the heavens withheld dew, and the earth withheld its produce.

And I called drought on the land, and on the mountains, and on the grain, and on the new wine, and on the oil, and on whatever the ground brings forth, and on man, and on beast, and on all the labor of hands.

And Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Yehoshua son of Yehotzadak, the high priest, and all the remnant of the people, heard the voice of יהוה their Elohim, and the words of Ḥaggai the prophet, as יהוה their Elohim had sent him. And the people feared before יהוה.

And Ḥaggai, the messenger of יהוה, said in the message of יהוה to the people, 'I am with you,' says יהוה.

And יהוה stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Yehudah, and the spirit of Yehoshua son of Yehotzadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and did work in the house of יהוה of hosts, their Elohim.
