And Dinah, daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Ya'aqov, went out to see the daughters of the land.

And Shechem, son of Ḥamor the Ḥivvite, prince of the land, saw her, and he took her, and lay with her, and humbled her.

And his soul clung to Dinah daughter of Ya'aqov, and he loved the young woman, and spoke to the heart of the young woman.

And Shechem spoke to Ḥamor his father, saying, 'Get for me this young woman as a wife.'

And Ya'aqov heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter, and his sons were with his livestock in the field, and Ya'aqov kept silent until they came.

And Ḥamor, father of Shechem, went out to Ya'aqov to speak with him.

And the sons of Ya'aqov came from the field when they heard, and the men were grieved and very angry, because he had done a disgraceful thing in Yisra'el by lying with the daughter of Ya'aqov, and so it must not be done.

And Ḥamor spoke with them, saying, 'Shechem my son has set his desire on your daughter; give her to him as a wife.'

And intermarry with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.

And live with us, and the land will be before you; settle and trade in it, and take possession of it.'

And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, 'Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me, I will give.'

Ask of me very much dowry and gifts, and I will give as you say to me, and give me the young woman as a wife.'

And the sons of Ya'aqov answered Shechem and Ḥamor his father with deceit, and they spoke because he had defiled Dinah their sister.

And they said to them, 'We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to a man who has foreskin, because it is a disgrace to us.'

Only on this condition will we agree to you, if you become like us, by circumcising every male among you.

And we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will live with you, and we will become one people.

But if you will not listen to us to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go.'

And their words pleased Ḥamor and Shechem son of Ḥamor.

And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he desired the daughter of Ya'aqov, and he was honored above all his father's household.

And Ḥamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and they spoke to the men of their city, saying:

'These men are peaceful with us; let them live in the land and trade in it, and the land, behold, is wide open before them; let us take their daughters as wives for ourselves, and give our daughters to them.'

Only on this condition will the men agree to live with us to become one people, by circumcising every male, just as they are circumcised.

Their livestock and their property and all their cattle, are they not ours? Only let us agree to them, and they will live with us.'

And all who went out of the gate of his city listened to Ḥamor and to Shechem his son, and every male, all who went out of the gate of his city, were circumcised.

And it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that Shimon and Levi, brothers of Dinah, each took his sword, and came against the city with confidence, and killed every male.

And they killed Ḥamor and Shechem his son by the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from the house of Shechem, and went out.

The sons of Ya'aqov came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.

Their sheep and their cattle and their donkeys, and all that was in the city and all that was in the field, they took.

And all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives they captured and plundered, and all that was in the house.

And Ya'aqov said to Shimon and to Levi, 'You have troubled me by making me a stench to the inhabitants of the land, to the Kena'ani and to the Perizzi, and I am few in number; they will gather against me and kill me, and I and my household will be destroyed.'

And they said, 'Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?'
