And Lavan got up early in the morning, and he kissed his sons and his daughters, and he blessed them, and Lavan went and returned to his place.

And Ya'aqov went on his way, and the messengers of Elohim encountered him.

And Ya'aqov said when he saw them, 'This is Elohim's camp,' and he called the name of that place Makhana'im.

And Ya'aqov sent messengers before him to 'Esav his brother, to the land of Se'ir, the country of Edom.

And he commanded them, saying, 'Thus you shall speak to my Adonai, to 'Esav: Thus says your servant Ya'aqov, 'I have sojourned with Lavan and have delayed until now.'

'And I have had oxen and donkeys, sheep and male and female servants, and I have sent to tell my Adonai, to find favor in your eyes.'

And the messengers returned to Ya'aqov, saying, 'We came to your brother, to 'Esav, and he is also coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.'

And Ya'aqov feared greatly, and he was distressed, and he divided the people who were with him, and the sheep, and the cattle, and the camels into two camps.

'If 'Esav comes to one camp and attacks it, then the remaining camp will be for escape.'

And Ya'aqov said, 'Elohim of my father Avraham and Elohim of my father Yitsḥaq, יהוה, who said to me, 'Return to your land and to your birthplace, and I will do good to you.'

'I am less than all the kindnesses and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant, for with my staff I crossed this Yarden, and now I have become two camps.'

'Deliver me, please, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of 'Esav, for I fear him, lest he comes and strikes me, the mother upon the children.'

'And you said, 'I will surely do good to you, and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted because of its multitude.'

And he stayed there that night, and he took from what came into his hand a gift for 'Esav his brother.

Two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams.

Thirty milk-giving female camels and their young, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.

And he put them into the hand of his servants, flock by flock, by themselves, and he said to his servants, 'Go on before me, and make a space between flock and flock.'

And he commanded the first, saying, 'When 'Esav my brother meets you and asks you, saying, 'Whose are you? And where are you going? And whose are these before you?'

Then you shall say, 'They belong to your servant Ya'aqov; it is a gift sent to my Adonai, to 'Esav, and behold, he also is behind us.'

And he commanded also the second, and also the third, and also all who followed the flocks, saying, 'In this manner you shall speak to 'Esav when you find him.'

'And you shall say, 'Also behold, your servant Ya'aqov is behind us,' because he said, 'I will appease his face with the gift that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will lift up my face.'

And the gift passed on before him, and he stayed that night in the camp.

And he got up that night, and he took his two wives, and his two female servants, and his eleven children, and he crossed the ford of Yabboq.

And he took them and caused them to cross the stream, and he caused all that he had to cross.

And Ya'aqov was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the dawn.

And he saw that he could not overcome him, and he touched the socket of his thigh, and the socket of Ya'aqov's thigh was dislocated as he wrestled with him.

And he said, 'Let me go, for the dawn is breaking,' and he said, 'I will not let you go unless you bless me.'

And he said to him, 'What is your name?' and he said, 'Ya'aqov.'

And he said, 'Your name shall no longer be called Ya'aqov, but Yisra'el, for you have struggled with Elohim and with men and have prevailed.'

And Ya'aqov asked and said, 'Please tell me your name,' and he said, 'Why do you ask my name?' and he blessed him there.

And Ya'aqov called the name of the place Peni'el, for 'I have seen Elohim face to face, and my life has been preserved.'

And the sun rose for him as he passed over Penu'el, and he was limping on his thigh.

Therefore, the children of Yisra'el do not eat the thigh-sinew which is on the socket of the thigh, until this day, because he touched the socket of Ya'aqov's thigh on the thigh-sinew.
