Yitsḥaq called to Ya'aqov, blessed him, commanded him, and said to him, 'Don't take a wife from the daughters of Kena'an.'

'Get up, go to Paddan-Aram to the house of Betu'el, your mother's father, and take a wife for yourself from the daughters of Lavan, your mother's brother.'

May El Shaddai bless you, make you fruitful, and multiply you, and may you become an assembly of peoples.

May he give you the blessing of Avraham—to you and your offspring with you—to inherit the land of your sojournings, which Elohim gave to Avraham.

Yitsḥaq sent Ya'aqov, and he went to Paddan-Aram to Lavan son of Betu'el the Aramean, brother of Rivqah, mother of Ya'aqov and 'Esav.

'Esav saw that Yitsḥaq had blessed Ya'aqov and sent him to Paddan-Aram to take a wife for himself from there when he blessed him, and commanded him, 'Don't take a wife from the daughters of Kena'an.'

Ya'aqov listened to his father and his mother and went to Paddan-Aram.

'Esav saw that the daughters of Kena'an were displeasing in the eyes of Yitsḥaq his father.

'Esav went to Yishma'el and took Maḥalat daughter of Yishma'el son of Avraham, sister of Nevayot, as a wife in addition to his wives.

Ya'aqov left Be'er Sheva and went toward Ḥaran.

He reached a certain place and spent the night there because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, put it under his head, and lay down in that place.

He dreamed, and there was a ladder set on the earth with its top reaching to the heavens. There, angels of Elohim were going up and down on it.

There was יהוה standing above it, and he said, 'I am יהוה, Elohim of Avraham your father and Elohim of Yitsḥaq. The land on which you are lying, I will give it to you and to your offspring.'

Your offspring will be like the dust of the earth. You will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All the families of the soil will be blessed through you and your offspring.

Look, I am with you, and I will keep you wherever you go and bring you back to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.

Ya'aqov awoke from his sleep and said, 'Surely יהוה is in this place, and I did not know it.'

He was afraid and said, 'How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of Elohim, and this is the gate of the heavens.'

Ya'aqov rose early in the morning, took the stone that he had put under his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it.

He called the name of that place Beit-El, though Luz was the name of the city formerly.

Ya'aqov vowed a vow, saying, 'If Elohim will be with me and keep me on this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to wear,

and I return in peace to my father's house, then יהוה will be my Elohim,

and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be a house of Elohim, and of all that you give me I will surely give a tenth to you.'
