And it was, the whole earth was one language and words the same.

And it was, as they migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.

And they said, each one to his neighbor, 'Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.' And the brick was to them for stone, and the bitumen was to them for mortar.

And they said, 'Come, let us build for ourselves a city and a tower, and its top in the heavens, and let us make for ourselves a name, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.'

And יהוה came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of Adam were building.

And יהוה said, 'Behold, they are one people and have one language for them all. And this is what they have begun to do, and now nothing they plan to do will be withheld from them.'

'Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another's speech.'

And יהוה scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city.

Therefore, its name was called Babel, because there יהוה confused the language of the whole earth, and from there יהוה scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

These are the generations of Shem. Shem was 100 years old when he fathered Arpakhshad two years after the flood.

And Shem lived after he fathered Arpakhshad 500 years and fathered sons and daughters.

And Arpakhshad lived 35 years and fathered Shelah.

And Arpakhshad lived after he fathered Shelah 403 years and fathered sons and daughters.

And Shelah lived 30 years and fathered Eber.

And Shelah lived after he fathered Eber 403 years and fathered sons and daughters.

And Eber lived 34 years and fathered Peleg.

And Eber lived after he fathered Peleg 403 years and fathered sons and daughters.

And Peleg lived 30 years and fathered Reu.

And Peleg lived after he fathered Reu 209 years and fathered sons and daughters.

And Reu lived 32 years and fathered Serug.

And Reu lived after he fathered Serug 207 years and fathered sons and daughters.

And Serug lived 30 years and fathered Nahor.

And Serug lived after he fathered Nahor 200 years and fathered sons and daughters.

And Nahor lived 29 years and fathered Terah.

And Nahor lived after he fathered Terah 119 years and fathered sons and daughters.

And Terah lived 70 years and fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

And these are the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran. And Haran fathered Lot.

And Haran died in the presence of Terah his father in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.

And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah.

And Sarai was barren; she had no child.

And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, the wife of Abram his son, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan. And they came as far as Haran and settled there.

And the days of Terah were 205 years, and Terah died in Haran.
