And the word of יהוה came to me, saying:

What is this proverb you use in the land of Yisra'el, saying, 'Fathers ate unripe grapes, and the teeth of the sons are set on edge'?

As I live, declares Adonai, יהוה, you will no longer have occasion to use this proverb in Yisra'el.

See, all souls belong to me; the soul of the father is like the soul of the son, both belong to me. The soul who sins, that one will die.

But if a man is righteous and does justice and righteousness,

He does not eat on the mountains, nor lift his eyes to the idols of the house of Yisra'el, nor defile his neighbor's wife, nor approach a menstruous woman.

He does not oppress anyone, but returns his pledge, does not commit robbery, gives his bread to the hungry, and covers the naked with clothing.

He does not lend at usury, nor take increase, but withdraws his hand from iniquity, executes true justice between man and man.

He walks in my statutes and keeps my judgments to do truth. He is righteous; he will surely live, declares Adonai, יהוה.

If he fathers a son who is a violent shedder of blood, or who does any of these things to his brother,

And he himself has not done any of these things, but has eaten on the mountains, and defiled his neighbor's wife,

Oppressed the poor and needy, committed robbery, not returned a pledge, lifted his eyes to the idols, committed an abomination,

Lent at usury and took increase, he will not live. He has done all these abominations; he will surely die; his blood will be on him.

But behold, he fathers a son who sees all his father's sins which he committed, and sees, and does not do likewise,

He does not eat on the mountains, nor lift his eyes to the idols of the house of Yisra'el, nor defile his neighbor's wife.

He does not oppress anyone, does not withhold a pledge, does not commit robbery, gives his bread to the hungry, and covers the naked with clothing.

He withdraws his hand from the poor, does not take usury or increase, but keeps my judgments, walks in my statutes; he will not die for his father's iniquity; he will surely live.

His father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother, and did what is not good among his people, behold, he will die for his iniquity.

Yet you say, 'Why does the son not bear the iniquity of the father?' When the son has done justice and righteousness, kept all my statutes, and done them, he will surely live.

The soul who sins, that one will die. The son will not bear the iniquity of the father, nor will the father bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous will be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon him.

But if the wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed, and keeps all my statutes, and does justice and righteousness, he will surely live; he will not die.

None of his transgressions which he has committed will be remembered against him; in his righteousness which he has done, he will live.

Do I indeed desire the death of the wicked? declares Adonai, יהוה. Is it not rather that he should turn from his ways and live?

But when the righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, he will die; all the righteousness that he has done will not be remembered; in his treachery in which he has trespassed, and in his sin in which he has sinned, he will die.

Yet you say, 'The way of Adonai is not right.' Hear now, house of Yisra'el: Are my ways not right? Are your ways not right?

When the righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and dies in it, for the iniquity which he has done, he will die.

Again, when the wicked man turns from his wickedness which he has committed, and does justice and righteousness, he himself will preserve his life.

Because he sees and turns from all his transgressions which he has committed, he will surely live; he will not die.

Still the house of Yisra'el says, 'The way of Adonai is not right.' Are my ways not right, house of Yisra'el? Are your ways not right?

Therefore I will judge you, house of Yisra'el, each according to his ways, declares Adonai, יהוה. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your downfall.

Cast away from you all your transgressions by which you have transgressed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, house of Yisra'el?

For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies, declares Adonai, יהוה. Therefore, turn and live.
