A man went from the house of Levi and took a daughter of Levi.

The woman conceived and gave birth to a son. She saw that he was good and hid him three months.

She could no longer hide him, so she took a papyrus basket for him, coated it with bitumen and pitch, put the child in it, and set it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.

His sister stood at a distance to see what would be done with him.

Pharaoh's daughter went down to bathe at the Nile, while her attendants walked along the Nile. She saw the basket among the reeds, sent her slave woman, and had it retrieved.

She opened it and saw the child. There was a baby boy crying. She took pity on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrew children."

His sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go call a Hebrew nurse to nurse the child for you?"

Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Go." The girl went and called the child's mother.

Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child and nurse him for me, and I'll pay your wages." So the woman took the child and nursed him.

The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, who took him as her son. She named him Mosheh, saying, "Because I drew him out of the water."

Now after those days, Mosheh had grown up. He went out to his brothers and saw their burdens. He saw an Egyptian man beating a Hebrew man, one of his brothers.

He looked this way and that and saw no one. He struck the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

He went out the next day, and there were two Hebrew men fighting. He said to the guilty one, "Why are you striking your fellow?"

He said, "Who made you a ruler and judge over us? Are you going to kill me like you killed the Egyptian?" Mosheh was afraid and said, "Surely the matter is known."

Pharaoh heard about this matter and sought to kill Mosheh, but Mosheh fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midyan. He sat down by the well.

The priest of Midyan had seven daughters. They came, drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.

The shepherds came and drove them away, but Mosheh stood up, helped them, and watered their flock.

They came to Reu'el their father, and he said, "Why have you come back so quickly today?"

They said, "An Egyptian man rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock."

He said to his daughters, "So where is he? Why did you leave the man? Call him so he can eat bread."

Mosheh agreed to stay with the man, and he gave his daughter Tsiporah to Mosheh.

She gave birth to a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, "I have been a sojourner in a foreign land."

Now after those many days, the king of Mitsrayim died. The sons of Yisra'el groaned from their labor, cried out, and their outcry for help from the labor went up to Elohim.

Elohim heard their groaning, and Elohim remembered his covenant with Avraham, with Yitsḥaq, and with Ya'aqov.

Elohim saw the sons of Yisra'el, and Elohim knew.
