And these are the names of the sons of Yisra'el who came to Mitsrayim with Ya'aqov, each man and his household, they came.

Re'uven, Shim'on, Levi, and Yehudah.

Yisaskhar, Zevulun, and Binyamin.

Dan and Naftali, Gad and Asher.

And all the souls who came out of Ya'aqov's thigh were seventy souls, and Yosef was in Mitsrayim.

And Yosef died, and all his brothers, and all that generation.

And the sons of Yisra'el were fruitful, and swarmed, and multiplied, and became very, very numerous, and the land was filled with them.

And a new king arose over Mitsrayim, who did not know Yosef.

And he said to his people, 'Look, the people of the sons of Yisra'el are more numerous and stronger than us.'

'Come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happens that war comes, and they also join our enemies, and fight against us, and go up from the land.'

And they appointed taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens, and they built store cities for Par'oh, Pithom and Ra'amses.

But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they swarmed, and they became disgusted because of the sons of Yisra'el.

And Mitsrayim enslaved the sons of Yisra'el with harsh labor.

And they made their lives bitter with hard service, with mortar and with bricks, and with all service in the field; all their service, which they served them with, was harsh labor.

And the king of Mitsrayim spoke to the Hebrew midwives, whose name the one was Shifrah, and the name of the second was Pu'ah.

And he said, 'When you deliver the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool, if it is a son, then you shall kill him, and if it is a daughter, then she shall live.'

But the midwives feared Elohim, and did not do as the king of Mitsrayim commanded them, and they let the male children live.

And the king of Mitsrayim called for the midwives and said to them, 'Why have you done this thing, and let the male children live?'

And the midwives said to Par'oh, 'Because the Hebrew women are not like the Mitsrayim women, for they are lively; before the midwife comes to them, they give birth.'

And Elohim dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very numerous.

And it happened, because the midwives feared Elohim, that He made them houses.

And Par'oh commanded all his people, saying, 'Every son who is born, you shall throw him into the river, and every daughter you shall let live.'
