How has the Sovereign One in His anger darkened the daughter Tsiyon! He has cast from the heavens the earth, the splendor of Yisra'el, and has not remembered the footstool of His feet on the day of His anger.

The Sovereign One has swallowed and not spared all the dwelling places of Ya'aqov; in His wrath He has torn down the fortresses of the daughter Yehudah; He has brought them to the ground; He has defiled the kingdom and its rulers.

He has cut off in fierce anger every horn of Yisra'el; He has turned back His right hand from the face of the enemy; and He has burned against Ya'aqov like a flaming fire that consumes all around.

He has bent His bow like an enemy; His right hand stands like an adversary; and He has killed all the delights of the eye; in the tent of the daughter Tsiyon, He has poured out like fire His fury.

The Sovereign One has become like an enemy; He has swallowed Yisra'el; He has swallowed all her palaces; He has destroyed her fortresses; and He has multiplied in the daughter Yehudah mourning and lamentation.

And He has violently seized like a garden His shelter; He has destroyed His appointed place; יהוה has caused to be forgotten in Tsiyon appointed time and Sabbath; and He has despised in the rage of His anger king and priest.

The Sovereign One has rejected His altar; He has defiled His sanctuary; He has handed over the walls of her palaces into the hand of the enemy; voices have sounded in the house of יהוה like the day of an appointed time.

יהוה has purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter Tsiyon; He has stretched out a measuring line; He has not turned back His hand from swallowing; and the rampart and the wall together have become weak.

Her gates have sunk into the ground; He has destroyed and broken her bars; her king and her rulers are among the nations; there is no law; also her prophets have not found a vision from יהוה.

The elders of the daughter Tsiyon sit on the ground; they have cast dust on their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth; the virgins of Yerushalayim have bowed their heads to the ground.

My eyes grow dim with tears; my insides churn; my liver is poured out on the ground because of the breaking of the daughter of my people, because the infant and the suckling have fainted in the squares of the city.

To their mothers they say, 'Where is grain and wine?' as they faint like the slain in the squares of the city, as their lives are poured out into the bosom of their mothers.

What can I testify to you? What can I liken to you, daughter Yerushalayim? What can I compare to you, that I may comfort you, virgin daughter Tsiyon? For your breaking is great like the sea; who will heal you?

Your prophets have seen for you falsehood and deception, and they have not revealed your iniquity to turn back your captivity; and they have seen for you false visions and delusions.

All who pass by clap their hands at you; they hiss and shake their heads at the daughter Yerushalayim: 'Is this the city that they called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?'

All your enemies have opened their mouths wide against you; they hiss and gnash their teeth; they say, 'We have swallowed her! Surely this is the day we looked for; we have found it; we have seen it!'

יהוה has done what He planned; He has carried out His word which He commanded from days of old; He has destroyed and has not spared, and He has made an enemy rejoice over you; He has exalted the horn of your adversaries.

Their heart cried out to the Sovereign One, 'O wall of the daughter Tsiyon, let your tears flow down like a river day and night; give yourself no rest; let the apple of your eye not be silent.'

Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches; pour out your heart like water before the face of the Sovereign One; lift up to Him your hands for the life of your infants, who faint from hunger at every street corner.

See, יהוה, and consider to whom You have done this! Are women eating their fruit, their infants whom they have nursed? Is it to be killed in the sanctuary of the Sovereign One, priest and prophet?

Young man and old man lie on the ground in the streets; my virgins and my young men have fallen by the sword; You have killed on the day of Your anger; You have slaughtered and have not pitied.

You have called as on an appointed day my terrors from all around, and there was no one in the day of the anger of יהוה who escaped and survived; those whom I have nursed and brought up, my enemy has consumed them.
