And Yehoshua son of Nun sent from Shittim two men, spies, secretly, saying, 'Go, see the land and Yerikho.' And they went and came into the house of a woman, a prostitute, and her name was Rakhav, and they lay down there.

And it was told to the king of Yerikho, saying, 'Look, men have come here tonight from the sons of Yisra'el to scout the land.'

And the king of Yerikho sent to Rakhav, saying, 'Bring out the men who came to you, who came into your house, because to scout the whole land they came.'

And the woman took the two men and hid them, and she said, 'Indeed, the men came to me, and I did not know from where they were.'

And the gate was about to be closed in the darkness, and the men went out; I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.'

And she had brought them up to the roof, and she hid them in the stalks of flax which she had arranged for herself on the roof.

And the men pursued them by the way of the Yarden, toward the crossings, and the gate was closed behind them after the pursuers went out after them.

And they had not yet lain down, and she had come up to them on the roof.

And she said to the men, 'I know that יהוה has given you the land, and that your terror has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have melted away because of you.'

'For we heard how יהוה dried up the waters of the Yam Suf before you when you went out from Mitsrayim, and what you did to the two kings of the Emori who were across the Yarden, to Sikhom and to Og, whom you utterly destroyed.'

'And we heard, and our hearts melted, and no spirit remained in anyone because of you, for יהוה your Elohim, He is Elohim in the heavens above and on the earth below.'

'And now, please swear to me by יהוה, that because I have dealt kindly with you, you will also deal kindly with my father's house, and you will give me a sign of truth.'

'And you will keep alive my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters and all who belong to them, and you will save our lives from death.'

And the men said to her, 'Our lives for yours, if you do not tell this matter of ours. And it will be, when יהוה gives us the land, that we will deal kindly and truthfully with you.'

And she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was in the wall of the city, and she lived in the wall.

And she said to them, 'Go to the mountains, lest the pursuers meet you, and hide yourselves there for three days until the pursuers return, and afterward you may go on your way.'

And the men said to her, 'We are innocent of this oath of yours which you have made us swear.'

'Look, we are coming into the land. This scarlet cord you shall tie in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather your father and your mother and your brothers and all your father's household to you in the house.'

'And it will be, anyone who goes out from the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head, and we will be innocent. And anyone who is with you in the house, his blood will be on our heads, if a hand is laid on him.'

'And if you tell this matter of ours, then we will be innocent of your oath which you have made us swear.'

And she said, 'According to your words, so it is.' And she sent them away, and they went, and she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

And they went and came to the mountains and stayed there for three days until the pursuers returned. And the pursuers searched on every road, and did not find them.

And the two men returned and came down from the mountains and crossed over, and came to Yehoshua son of Nun, and told him everything that had happened to them.

And they said to Yehoshua, 'Surely יהוה has given into our hand all the land, and also all the inhabitants of the land have melted away because of us.'
