Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

If one tries to reason, will you become impatient? But who can refrain from speaking words?

Look, you have disciplined with words, and you have weakened hands.

Indeed, you make reverence cease, and you choose speech before El.

Your mouth declares your iniquity, and you choose the tongue of the crafty.

Your own mouth will condemn you, and not I; and your lips will answer against you.

Are you the first man born? Or were you brought forth before the hills?

Do you listen to the secret counsel of Elohim? And do you withhold wisdom for yourself?

What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not with us?

Even the gray-haired and the very old are among us, older than your father in days.

Are the consolations of El too few for you? And is there a gentle word with you?

Why has your heart carried you away? And why do your eyes flash?

Because you turn your spirit against El, and you let words go out from your mouth.

What is a human that he should be clean? And what is one born of a woman that he should be righteous?

Look, He does not trust His holy ones, and the heavens are not clean in His eyes.

How much less an abomination and a corrupted one, a man who drinks iniquity like water!

I will show you; listen to me! And what I have seen, I will tell.

What the wise tell, and do not hide from their fathers.

To them alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them.

All the days of the wicked man he suffers pain, and the number of years is hidden for the oppressor.

A sound of terrors is in his ears; in prosperity, the destroyer will come upon him.

He does not believe he will return from darkness; and he is destined for the sword.

He wanders for bread; where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is ready in his hand.

Distress and anguish will terrify him; they will overcome him like a king ready for battle.

Because he stretched out his hand against El, and he strengthened himself against Shaddai.

He ran against Him with his neck, with the thick bosses of his shields.

Because he covered his face with his fat, and made thick folds upon his loins.

And he dwelt in ruined cities, houses where no one lived, which were destined to fall.

He will not be rich, and his wealth will not stand, nor will his possessions spread over the earth.

He will not escape from darkness; his suckling will dry up by the flame, and the wind of his mouth will carry him away.

Let him not trust in vanity, being deceived, for vanity will be his recompense.

Before his day it will be fulfilled, and his branch will not be green.

He will strip his vine like a green branch, and cast off his blossom like an olive tree.

For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of bribery.

He conceives trouble and gives birth to iniquity, and their belly prepares deceit.
