This was the word of יהוה to Yirmeyahu concerning the troubles.

Yehudah mourns and its gates are weakened; they are darkened to the ground, and the cry of Yerushalayim has risen.

And their nobles sent their young men for water; they came to cisterns, they found no water; they returned their vessels empty; they were shamed and humiliated and covered their heads.

Because of the ground, it was terrified, for there was no rain on the land; the farmers were shamed, they covered their heads.

For even the doe in the field gave birth, and abandoned, because there was no grass.

And wild donkeys stood on the heights; they sniffed the wind like jackals; their eyes failed, for there was no grass.

If our iniquities testified against us, יהוה, act for the sake of Your Name; for our rebellions are many; we have sinned against You.

Hope of Yisra'el, its Savior in a time of trouble, why will You be like a sojourner in the land and like a traveler turning aside to lodge?

Why will You be like a man stunned, like a mighty one unable to save? And You are in our midst, יהוה, and Your Name is called upon us; do not forsake us.

Thus says יהוה to this people: So they loved to move their feet, they did not hold back; and יהוה did not accept them. Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins.

And יהוה said to me, Do not pray for the good of this people.

Though they fast, I will not hear their cry; and though they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I will not accept them, for by sword and by famine and by pestilence I am consuming them.

And I said, Alas, Adonai יהוה! Behold, the prophets are saying to them, You will not see sword, and famine will not be for you, for I will give you true peace in this place.

And יהוה said to me, The prophets prophesy falsely in My Name; I did not send them, nor did I command them, nor did I speak to them. False visions and divination and idols and the deceit of their heart, they prophesy to you.

Therefore, thus says יהוה concerning the prophets who prophesy in My Name, and I did not send them, and they say, Sword and famine will not be in this land; by sword and by famine those prophets will be destroyed.

And the people concerning whom they prophesy will be cast out in the streets of Yerushalayim because of famine and sword, and there is no one to bury them; they, their wives, their sons, and their daughters; and I will pour out their evil upon them.

And you will say to them, Let my eyes flow with tears, night and day, and let them not cease, for a great breach has broken the virgin daughter of my people, a very severe wound.

If I go out to the field, behold, the slain of the sword; and if I come into the city, behold, the sick from famine; for both prophet and priest wander to a land and do not know.

Have You utterly rejected Yehudah? Or has Your soul loathed Tsiyon? Why have You struck us, and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but there is no good; and for a time of healing, and behold, terror.

We acknowledge, יהוה, our wickedness, the iniquity of our fathers, for we have sinned against You.

Do not despise for the sake of Your Name; do not disgrace the throne of Your glory; remember, do not break Your covenant with us.

Is there among the idols of the nations one who causes rain? Or do the heavens give showers? Is it not You, יהוה our Elohim? And we will hope in You, for You have made all these things.
