And there was a man from Ramatayim, a Tsufi from the mountain of Efrayim, and his name was Elqanah, son of Yerokham, son of Elihu, son of Toḥu, son of Tsuf, an Efrati.

And he had two wives; the name of one was Ḥannah, and the name of the second was Pninah. And Pninah had children, but Ḥannah had no children.

And this man would go up from his city year by year to bow down and to sacrifice to יהוה of Hosts in Shilo. And there were the two sons of Eli, Ḥofni and Pinḥas, priests to יהוה.

And it came to pass on the day that Elqanah sacrificed, and he gave portions to Pninah his wife and to all her sons and daughters.

But to Ḥannah he gave one portion, double, because he loved Ḥannah, and יהוה had closed her womb.

And her rival provoked her, also provoking her, because יהוה had closed her womb.

And so he would do year by year; whenever she went up to the house of יהוה, so she provoked her, and she would weep and not eat.

And Elqanah her husband said to her, 'Ḥannah, why are you weeping? And why are you not eating? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?'

And Ḥannah arose after they ate in Shilo, and after they drank, and Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the temple of יהוה.

And she was bitter of soul, and she prayed to יהוה, and wept, weeping.

And she vowed a vow and said, 'O יהוה of Hosts, if you will indeed look upon the suffering of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, and give to your servant seed of men, then I will give him to יהוה all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.'

And it came to pass as she prolonged her prayer before יהוה, that Eli was watching her mouth.

And Ḥannah, she was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard, and Eli thought she was drunk.

And Eli said to her, 'How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine from you.'

And Ḥannah answered and said, 'No, my Adonai! I am a woman of bitter spirit; and wine and strong drink I have not drunk, but I have poured out my soul before יהוה.'

'Do not consider your servant as a daughter of Belial, because from the abundance of my complaint and my provocation I have spoken until now.'

And Eli answered and said, 'Go in peace, and the Elohim of Yisra'el will give your petition which you have asked of Him.'

And she said, 'May your servant find favor in your eyes.' And the woman went her way and ate, and her countenance was no longer sad.

And they rose up in the morning and bowed down before יהוה, and they returned and came to their house in Ramatayim. And Elqanah knew Ḥannah his wife, and יהוה remembered her.

And it came to pass at the turn of the days, that Ḥannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Shemu'el, because 'I have asked him of יהוה.'

And the man Elqanah went up, and all his household, to sacrifice to יהוה the yearly sacrifice and his vow.

But Ḥannah did not go up, because she said to her husband, 'Not until the boy is weaned, then I will bring him, and he will appear before יהוה and remain there forever.'

And Elqanah her husband said to her, 'Do what is good in your eyes; stay until you have weaned him. Only may יהוה confirm his word.' And the woman stayed and nursed her son until she weaned him.

And she brought him up with her when she had weaned him, with three bulls, and one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of יהוה in Shilo, and the boy was young.

And they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the boy to Eli.

And she said, 'Oh my Adonai, as your soul lives, my Adonai, I am the woman who stood here with you to pray to יהוה.'

'It was for this boy that I prayed, and יהוה has given me my petition which I asked of Him.'

'And also, I have lent him to יהוה; all the days that he lives, he is lent to יהוה.' And he bowed down there to יהוה.
