And Satan stood against Yisra'el, and he provoked David to number Yisra'el.

And David said to Yo'av and to the chiefs of the people, 'Go, number Yisra'el from Be'er Sheva even to Dan, and bring me word, and I will know their number.'

And Yo'av said, 'May יהוה add to your people, as they are, a hundred times more. Are not, my Adonai the king, all of them servants to my Adonai? Why does my Adonai seek this? Why will it be for guilt to Yisra'el?'

And the king's word was strong against Yo'av, and Yo'av went out and walked throughout all Yisra'el, and he came to Yerushalayim.

And Yo'av gave the number of the census of the people to David, and all Yisra'el was a thousand thousands and a hundred thousand men drawing sword, and Yehudah was four hundred and seventy thousand men drawing sword.

And Levi and Binyamin he did not number among them, because the king's word was an abomination to Yo'av.

And the thing was evil in the eyes of Elohim concerning this matter, and He struck Yisra'el.

And David said to Elohim, 'I have sinned greatly, that I have done this thing. And now, please remove the iniquity of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.'

And יהוה spoke to Gad, David's seer, saying,

'Go and speak to David, saying, Thus says יהוה: Three things I am offering you; choose for yourself one of them, and I will do it to you.'

And Gad came to David and said to him, 'Thus says יהוה: Take for yourself.'

'Either three years of famine, or three months of being cut off before your enemies, and the sword of your enemies pursuing, or three days the sword of יהוה, even pestilence in the land, and the angel of יהוה destroying throughout all the border of Yisra'el. And now, see what answer I will bring back to the one who sent me.'

And David said to Gad, 'I am in great distress. Let me fall, please, into the hand of יהוה, for His compassions are very great, and into the hand of man let me not fall.'

And יהוה sent pestilence upon Yisra'el, and there fell from Yisra'el seventy thousand men.

And Elohim sent an angel to Yerushalayim to destroy it, and as it was destroying, יהוה saw, and He relented concerning the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, 'Enough! Now stay your hand.' And the angel of יהוה was standing by the threshing floor of 'Ornan the Yevusite.

And David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of יהוה standing between the earth and the sky, and his sword drawn in his hand, stretched out against Yerushalayim. And David and the elders fell on their faces, covered in sackcloth.

And David said to Elohim, 'Was it not I who commanded to number the people? And I am the one who sinned and did evil. And these sheep, what have they done? יהוה my Elohim, let Your hand, please, be against me and against my father's house, but not against Your people for a plague.'

And the angel of יהוה commanded Gad to say to David, 'Go up and build an altar to יהוה on the threshing floor of 'Ornan the Yevusite.'

And David went up according to the word of Gad, which he spoke in the name of יהוה.

And 'Ornan turned and saw the angel, and his four sons were with him, hiding. And 'Ornan was threshing wheat.

And David came to 'Ornan, and 'Ornan looked and saw David, and he went out from the threshing floor and bowed to David with his face to the ground.

And David said to 'Ornan, 'Give me the place of the threshing floor, and I will build on it an altar to יהוה. For full silver give it to me, and the plague will be held back from the people.'

And 'Ornan said to David, 'Take it for yourself, and let my Adonai the king do what is good in his eyes. See, I have given the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing sledges for wood, and the wheat for a grain offering. I have given all.'

And King David said to 'Ornan, 'No, but I will surely buy it for full silver, for I will not offer what is yours to יהוה, nor offer a burnt offering for free.'

And David gave to 'Ornan in that place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.

And David built an altar there to יהוה, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and he called to יהוה, and He answered him with fire from the sky upon the altar of burnt offering.

And יהוה spoke to the angel, and he returned his sword to its sheath.

At that time, when David saw that יהוה had answered him on the threshing floor of 'Ornan the Yevusite, he sacrificed there.

And the tabernacle of יהוה, which Mosheh made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place in Giv'on.

And David could not go before it to seek Elohim, for he was terrified because of the sword of the angel of יהוה.
