And it happened after this, and Naḥash king of the sons of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his place.

And David said, 'I will do kindness with Ḥanun son of Naḥash, because his father did kindness with me.' And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And the servants of David came to the land of the sons of Ammon, to Ḥanun, to comfort him.

And the princes of the sons of Ammon said to Ḥanun, 'Does David honor your father in your eyes, because he sent comforters to you? Have not his servants come to you to spy and to overthrow and to scout the land?'

And Ḥanun took the servants of David, and he shaved them, and he cut their garments in the middle, to the crotch, and he sent them away.

And they went, and they told David concerning the men. And the king sent to meet them, because the men were greatly shamed. And the king said, 'Stay in Yericho until your beards grow, and you will return.'

And the sons of Ammon saw that they had made themselves foul with David. And Ḥanun and the sons of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Aram Naharayim and from Aram Ma'akah and from Tsivah.

And they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Ma'akah, and his people. And they came and encamped before Meidva. And the sons of Ammon gathered from their cities and came to the war.

And David heard, and he sent Yo'av and all the army of the mighty ones.

And the sons of Ammon went out, and they arrayed for war at the entrance of the city. And the kings who came were alone in the field.

And Yo'av saw that the face of the war was toward him, front and back. And he chose from all the chosen of Yisra'el, and he arrayed against Aram.

And the rest of the people he gave into the hand of his brother Avshalom, and they arrayed against the sons of Ammon.

And he said, 'If Aram is stronger than me, then you will be my salvation. And if the sons of Ammon are stronger than you, then I will save you.'

Be strong, and let us be strong for our people, and for the cities of our Elohim. And יהוה will do what is good in His eyes.'

And Yo'av and the people who were with him drew near before Aram for war, and they fled from his face.

And the sons of Ammon saw that Aram fled, and they also fled from the face of Avshalom his brother, and they came to the city. And Yo'av came to Yerushalayim.

And Aram saw that they were struck down before Yisra'el. And they sent messengers, and they brought out Aram who were from across the river, and Shofakh, the commander of Hadade'ezer's army, was before them.

And it was told to David, and he gathered all Yisra'el, and he crossed the Yarden, and he came to them. And he arrayed against them. And David arrayed for war against Aram, and they fought with him.

And Aram fled from before Yisra'el, and David killed from Aram seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand men on foot. And Shofakh, the commander of the army, he killed.

And the servants of Hadade'ezer saw that they were struck down before Yisra'el, and they made peace with David, and they served him. And Aram was not willing to help the sons of Ammon anymore.
