Ya'aqov settled in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Kena'an.

These are the generations of Ya'aqov. Yosef, seventeen years old, was shepherding his brothers with the flock, and he was a youth with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives. And Yosef brought their evil report to their father.

And Yisra'el loved Yosef more than all his sons, for he was a son of his old age to him, and he made for him a tunic of many colors.

And his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and they could not speak peaceably to him.

And Yosef dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him even more.

And he said to them, 'Hear now this dream which I have dreamed.'

'And behold, we were binding sheaves in the middle of the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright, and behold, your sheaves surrounded and bowed down to my sheaf.'

And his brothers said to him, 'Will you indeed reign over us? Or will you indeed rule over us?' And they hated him even more because of his dreams and because of his words.

And he dreamed another dream, and he told it to his brothers, and he said, 'Behold, I have dreamed another dream, and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.'

And he told it to his father and to his brothers, and his father rebuked him and said to him, 'What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will we indeed come, I and your mother and your brothers, to bow down to you to the ground?'

And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter.

And his brothers went to shepherd their father's flock in Shechem.

And Yisra'el said to Yosef, 'Are not your brothers shepherding in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.' And he said to him, 'Here I am.'

And he said to him, 'Go now, see the well-being of your brothers and the well-being of the flock, and bring me word.' And he sent him from the valley of Hevron, and he came to Shechem.

And a man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, 'What are you seeking?'

And he said, 'I am seeking my brothers. Tell me, please, where are they shepherding?'

And the man said, 'They have departed from here, for I heard them say, Let us go to Dotan.' And Yosef went after his brothers and found them in Dotan.

And they saw him from afar, and before he came near to them, they plotted against him to kill him.

And they said one to another, 'Behold, this dreamer of dreams has come.'

'And now, come, and let us kill him and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, a wild animal devoured him. And we will see what will become of his dreams.'

And Re'uven heard, and he rescued him from their hand, and said, 'Let us not strike him dead.'

And Re'uven said to them, 'Do not shed blood. Cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him.' So that he might rescue him from their hand to return him to his father.

And it happened when Yosef came to his brothers, that they stripped Yosef of his tunic, the tunic of many colors which was on him.

And they took him and cast him into the pit, and the pit was empty; there were no waters in it.

And they sat down to eat bread, and they lifted their eyes and saw, and behold, a caravan of Yishma'elim was coming from Gil'ad, and their camels were carrying gum, balm, and myrrh, going to bring them down to Mitsrayim.

And Yehudah said to his brothers, 'What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?'

'Come, and let us sell him to the Yishma'elim, and let our hand not be on him, for he is our brother, our flesh.' And his brothers listened.

And Midyanite men, traders, passed by, and they drew and lifted Yosef up out of the pit, and they sold Yosef to the Yishma'elim for twenty pieces of silver. And they brought Yosef to Mitsrayim.

And Re'uven returned to the pit, and behold, Yosef was not in the pit, and he tore his clothes.

And he returned to his brothers and said, 'The youth is not here, and I, where am I to go?'

And they took Yosef's tunic, and they slaughtered a male goat, and they dipped the tunic in the blood.

And they sent the tunic of many colors and brought it to their father and said, 'This we have found. Recognize now, is this your son's tunic or not?'

And he recognized it and said, 'It is my son's tunic; a wild animal devoured him; Yosef has surely been torn to pieces!'

And Ya'aqov tore his garments and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

And all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted, and he said, 'For I will go down mourning to my son, to Sheol.' And his father wept for him.

And the Midyanites sold him in Mitsrayim to Potifar, Par'oh's official, the captain of the guard.
