And Sarah, Avram's wife, did not bear him children. And she had a female servant, an Egyptian, and her name was Hagar.

And Sarah said to Avram, 'See now, יהוה has restrained me from bearing. Come now, go in to my female servant; perhaps I will be built up from her.' And Avram listened to Sarah's voice.

And Sarah, Avram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her female servant, after ten years of Avram dwelling in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Avram her husband as a wife.

And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And she saw that she had conceived, and she looked with contempt on her mistress.

And Sarah said to Avram, 'My oppression is upon you. I gave my female servant into your embrace, and she saw that she had conceived, and I looked with contempt in her eyes. May יהוה judge between me and you.'

And Avram said to Sarah, 'See, your female servant is in your hand; do to her what is good in your eyes.' And Sarah afflicted her, and she fled from her presence.

And the angel of יהוה found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.

And he said, 'Hagar, Sarah's female servant, from where did you come and where are you going?' And she said, 'From the presence of Sarah my mistress, I am fleeing.'

And the angel of יהוה said to her, 'Return to your mistress and humble yourself under her hands.'

And the angel of יהוה said to her, 'I will greatly multiply your seed, and it will not be counted because of the multitude.'

And the angel of יהוה said to her, 'Behold, you are pregnant and will bear a son, and you shall call his name Ishmael, because יהוה has heard your affliction.'

And he will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand will be against him, and he will dwell opposite all his brothers.'

And she called the name of יהוה who spoke to her, 'You are El-Roi.' For she said, 'Have I also seen here after seeing?'

Therefore, the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

And Hagar bore a son to Avram, and Avram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.

And Avram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Avram.
