After these things, the word of יהוה came to Avram in a vision, saying, 'Do not fear, Avram; I am a shield for you. Your reward is very great.'

And Avram said, 'Adonai יהוה, what will you give me, and I am going childless? And the son of my house, Eliezer of Damascus, is my heir.'

And Avram said, 'Look, you have not given me offspring, and behold, a son of my house is my heir.'

And behold, the word of יהוה came to him, saying, 'This one will not be your heir, but he who will come from your own body, he will be your heir.'

And he brought him outside and said, 'Look now toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.' And he said to him, 'So will your offspring be.'

And he believed in יהוה, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

And he said to him, 'I am יהוה who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to inherit it.'

And he said, 'Adonai יהוה, by what will I know that I will inherit it?'

And he said to him, 'Take for me a three-year-old heifer, and a three-year-old female goat, and a three-year-old ram, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.'

And he took all these for himself, and he cut them in the middle, and he placed each piece opposite its fellow, but the birds he did not cut.

And birds of prey came down on the carcasses, and Avram drove them away.

And as the sun was setting, a deep sleep fell on Avram, and behold, a great, dark terror was falling on him.

And he said to Avram, 'You shall surely know that your offspring will be a sojourner in a land not their own, and they will serve them, and they will afflict them for four hundred years.'

And also the nation which they will serve, I will judge, and afterward they will come out with great wealth.

And you will come to your fathers in peace; you will be buried in a good old age.

And in the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.'

And it came to pass, as the sun was setting, and it was dark, and behold, a smoking oven and a torch of fire passed between these cut pieces.

On that day, יהוה made a covenant with Avram, saying, 'To your offspring I have given this land, from the river of Mitsrayim to the great river, the river Perat.'

'The Qenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Qadmonites,'

'And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaim,'

'And the Amorites, and the Kena'anites, and the Girgashites, and the Yevusites.'
