And as Ezra prayed, and as he confessed, weeping and falling before the house of Elohim, a very great assembly of Yisra'el, men and women and children, gathered to him, for the people wept with great weeping.

And Shekhanyah, son of Yeḥi'el, of the sons of 'Elam, answered and said to Ezra, 'We have trespassed against our Elohim and have taken foreign women from the peoples of the land, and now there is hope for Yisra'el concerning this.'

'And now let us make a covenant with our Elohim to send away all these women and those born of them, according to the counsel of Adonai and those who tremble at the commandment of our Elohim, and let it be done according to the Torah.'

'Arise, for the matter is upon you, and we are with you; be strong and do it.'

'Then Ezra arose and made the chiefs of the priests, the Levites, and all Yisra'el swear to do according to this matter, and they swore.'

'Then Ezra arose from before the house of Elohim and went into the chamber of Yeḥokhanan, son of Elyashiv, and he went there; he ate no bread and drank no water, for he was mourning over the transgression of the exiles.'

'And a proclamation was made throughout Yehudah and Yerushalayim to all the sons of the exile, that they should gather to Yerushalayim.'

'And whoever does not come within three days, according to the counsel of the officials and the elders, all his property shall be forfeited, and he himself shall be separated from the assembly of the exile.'

'Then all the men of Yehudah and Binyamin gathered to Yerushalayim within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month, and all the people sat in the square of the house of Elohim, trembling because of the matter and the heavy rain.'

'Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, 'You have trespassed and have taken foreign women, to add to the guilt of Yisra'el.'

'And now give thanks to יהוה, Elohim of your fathers, and do His will, and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign women.'

'Then all the assembly answered and said with a loud voice, 'It is as you have said concerning us; we must do.'

'But the people are many, and it is the rainy season, and we do not have the strength to stand outside, and this work is not for one day or two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.'

'Let our officials stand for all the assembly, and let everyone in our cities who has taken foreign women come at appointed times, and with them the elders of each city and its judges, until the anger of our Elohim is turned away from us concerning this matter.'

'Only Yonatan, son of Asahel, and Yaḥziyah, son of Tiqwah, stood against this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.'

'And the sons of the exile did so. And Ezra the priest, and the heads of the fathers' houses according to their fathers' houses, and all of them by name, took their positions. And they sat on the first day of the tenth month to investigate the matter.'

'And they finished with all the men who had taken foreign women by the first day of the first month.'

'And from the sons of the priests who had taken foreign women, there were found among the sons of Yeshu'a, son of Yotsadaq, and his brothers: Ma'aseyah, and Eli'ezer, and Yariyb, and Gedalyah.'

'And they gave their hand to send away their wives, and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their guilt.'

'And from the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadyah.'

'And from the sons of Harim: Ma'aseyah, and Eliyah, and Shemayah, and Yeḥi'el, and 'Uziyah.'

'And from the sons of Pashur: Elyo'enai, Ma'aseyah, Yishmael, Netanel, Yozabad, and 'El'asah.'

'And from the Levites: Yozabad, and Shim'i, and Kelayah (he is Kelitah), Petaḥyah, Yehudah, and Eli'ezer.'

'And from the singers: Elyashib. And from the gatekeepers: Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.'

'And from Yisra'el: from the sons of Parosh, Ramiyah, and Yizziyah, and Malkiyah, and Miyamin, and 'El'azar, and Malkiyah, and Binyah.'

'And from the sons of 'Elam: Mattanyah, Zekharyah, and Yeḥi'el, and 'Abdi, and Yeremoth, and Eliyah.'

'And from the sons of Zattu: Elyo'enai, Elyashib, Mattanyah, and Yeremoth, and Zabad, and 'Azizah.'

'And from the sons of Bebai: Yeḥanan, Ḥananyah, Zabbai, and 'Athlai.'

'And from the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluk, and Adaiyah, Yashub, and She'al, and Ramoth.'

'And from the sons of Paḥath-Mo'ab: Adnah, and Kelal, Benaiah, Ma'aseyah, Mattanyah, Mattithai, and Bezalel, and Binnui, and Manasseh.'

'And the sons of Harim: Eli'ezer, Yishiyah, Malkiyah, Shemayah, Shim'on.'

'Binyamin, Malluk, Shemaryah.'

'From the sons of Ḥashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Elipelet, Yeremai, Manasseh, Shim'i.'

'From the sons of Bani: Ma'adai, 'Amram, and U'el.'

'Benaiah, Bedayah, Keluhu.'

'Vanyah, Meremoth, Elyashib.'

'Mattanyah, Mattinai, and Ya'ashai.'

'And Bani and Binnui, Shim'i.'

'And Shelemyah, and Nathan, and Adaiyah.'

'Machnadabai, Shashai, Sharai.'

'Azra'el, and Shelemyahu, Shimriyah.

Shallum, Amaryah, Yosef.

From the sons of Nevo: Ye'i'el, Mattithyah, Zabad, Zevina, Yaddai, and Yo'el, Benayah.

All these took foreign wives, and some of them had wives and bore sons.
