Note: New moon starts out at the top of the large power line in the first picture descending with each picture over about 15 minutes to the moon set.

My mother and I started looking right before sunset and saw the new moon around 7:10 pm EDT. It was low on the horizon but even visible through the thick haze. YM (2 observers)
