The very thin, very faint, sliver of the New Moon, was first spotted with my naked eyes, after sunset, at 7:44 PM (AZ time, same as CA time). No clouds were in the sky. 6 photos were taken on my cell phone, but no light from the moon was visible on the photographs. The moon disappeared into the tree line at approximately 8:03 PM.
